Are you talking about 1 server in your home left on 24/7 like a regular desktop?

Or an actual farm which includes network equipment, backup power, and the refridgerator full of beer in the unused cabinet?

My Rig(see Sig) doubles as a 24/7 server and the cost is not noticeable.
Refrigerators and other appliances cost more.

Man, way too many variables.

First pick a power consumption. This could be from 50W for one server we had here at work, 500W for another, or if we are talking some 16 CPU work horse, 2KW or more. Assuming you are using a desktop sized machine, the PSU is most likely rated somewhere around 350W. Now, how much of your server are you using? Lets assume you are only drawing 50% of the maximum, so 175W. As the PSU may only be 80% efficient, you may actually be drawing 220W from the wall. This will come out to be just over 5.25 KWH a day. Where I live, electricity is running approx 7.5c a KWH, which is 40c a day, or $12.00 a month.

However, leave on your monitor, print frequently, have lots of HD's. multiple CPUS... and the price will only rise.

Well, I don't know for sure, but if it is just a normal computer (I'm talking, no insane backup systems, or some huge server that takes massive amounts of power), I have heard it takes about a penny an hour to run it.

Most desktops running 24/7 use minimal amounts of power. However, the more components that are in your computer, such as ram, drives, etc, the more power they consume.

I have two servers running at home and I really haven't noticed any increase in my bill. I have no idea really how much it would cost. Not all that much I'm guessing.

Laptops run a max of 50W (inc monitor) from what I recall. I'd imagine a regular desktop system would probably be close to that, prehaps up to 75Watts (without monitor). Leave a light bulb on for a month, it'll cost the same.

Well, FWIW, I have 2 systems, 24/7, TV almost always on, Tivo always on, fridge, etc., and my electric bill runs around $45/month unless I'm running the A/C.
