...for depression, stress, etc.

I was surprised to find out that a number of friends of mine take perscription drugs for depression and stress and what not... so I was wondering what my fellow ATOT folk were taking and why and what side effects have you noticed.

<edit> PS: Herbals don't count.... AS THEY DON'T DO SQUAT!!! :p </edit>

<eidt^2> The word PERSCRIPTION has been put in bold so narcotics are not brought into discussion. </edit^2>

Cough syrup? Ewww!!!!

I'm talking about going to a doctor and getting a perscription. Not raiding the medicine cabinet. :p

Oh well... this thread may spiral downward after all. :(

Getting a medication for depression is not a democratic process. You need to talk to a qualified professional rather than going by someone elses experience. Bad, bad idea to do otherwise.

Prescription drugs? None. Depression doesn't happen but I do feel a bit stressed occasionally and tequila works wonders without any side effects when used in moderation. :)

Oh my god! You think I'm taking suggestions? None of you people even know me! How the hell would you be able to tell me what drugs I should take!??!?

I'm not looking for suggestions for perscription drugs... That's what doctors are for. That's why they are PERSCRIPTION drugs.

I'm just wondering who here is taking them, why and what side effects they were experiencing. I'm curious to see if the experiences of the people on this forum parallel the people in my "real" life.

I had a friend of mine tell me the same thing. He said he'd wake up, get ready for work, go to work, work, come home, eat, sleep. He was married too! He said he just didn't want to do anything. Watch TV, go out, have sex. Pretty sad. :(

I think I'd take clinical depression over that! :Q

First, it is prescription, not perscription.
Second, if you are curious about side effects in an objective sense, then what you learn by asking here will be skewed. That is just a polling fact. If you want to know about incidents of side effects then a good entry level reference is the PDR (physicians desk reference) Your library most likely has one.
If you want to know about ATOT members only, then go for it. You will get all sort of replies.

Friend of mine suffers from depression and she takes Zoloft. Seems to work very well for her. Does seem to fatigue her a bit but overall she's fine. No crazy mood swings or side effects.

Actually, you've got that backwards. Taking a pill for depression is like turning down the radio so you can hear the source of the knocking.

jonnyGURU,

I took paxil (either 40 or 60 mg/day, can't remember for sure) for four months for depression. It worked fairly well, but the side-effects were a f*cking nightmare. Cold sweats, nausea, lethargy, tremors, weight gain (about 35-40 pounds), change in appetite, chattering teeth, severely dry mouth, and major sexual side-effects. It's not a "happy pill", but it did seem to turn down the volume enough for me to regain control and feel "normal" again, even after discontinuing the drug. Most often, it's prescribed for 6 to 9 months the first time.

I currently take serzone (400 mg/day) for panic attacks, mild OCD, and mild paranoias. The side effects (dry mouth and eyes, extreme lethargy for two months, blurry vision, less disruptive sexual side-effects) are much better, but a little less than 1% of those who take it suffer catastrophic liver failure. Most doctors are becomming a little reluctant to prescribe it, especially for older people and heavy drinkers who are much more likely to have existing liver damage. It works very well in decreasing the intensity and frequency of the symptoms enough to allow me to overcome it permanently.

If you or someone you know is considering taking an anti-depressant, make sure to read up as much as you can. WebMD's drug library is a good start, and do a google search for depression. There are plenty of other options besides drugs, like exercise, change in diet, avoiding alcohol, etc. IMAO, unless the depression is severe (constant daily interference in your life for more than just a week or a month, inability to enjoy any activities, suicidal thoughts and tendencies, etc.) anti-depressants should be a last resort.

If the problems also include anxiety and/or panic attacks, then definitely pick up a copy of The Anxiety Disease. It does a better job of explaining anxiety disorders than any physician I've ever spoken with, and takes less than two hours to read.

Serzone Warning, just thought you might want to talk to your doc about it.

EDIT: Do not stop taking it without talking to your doctor either.

<< depression >>

When I get depressed, I go cy about it to my girlfriend, bitch and complain, and eventually feel better.

<< stress >>

Finish whatever it was that I was supposed to be doing, and take the weekend off.

Seriosly, am I the only one who thinks there's something wrong in our society when everyone's taking all sorts of drugs whenever theyt're a bit upset? Jesus, it's life, it's not always perfect, learn to live with it.

Spoken like someone who's never experienced it.

"Just snap out of it!"

It simply doesn't work that way.

On the radio earlier this week, they were talking about a long-term independent study done on anti- depression drugs and they found that placebos were just as effective as most of the drugs. They way they get FDA approval is they have to show positive results in at least 2 different trials, but they conduct the trials and have as many as they want. You get the idea.
