Some of my coworker just claim sick leave and do whatever they need to do; while some does come back with a doctor's note.

vague, taboo-ed, not spoken off.

when confronting HR with this issue, they will require you to have a doctor's note.
however, I have seen some get away with it.

i email my boss and HR the morning of when i don't feel like going to work saying i'm not feeling well. if we're sick for more than a week or so they want a doctor's note but they didn't really yell at me for not bringing one when i had strep a few years ago.

Why the hell would you need a doctor's note? What if you just caught a minor cold and didn't want to go to a doctor. Even if you do, is the company gonna pay the bill?

I am not allowed to call in sick....seriously, it's not an option. I'd have to be in the hospital.

I'm a grad student. I kinda just don't show up. If I have to teach, I con one of my friends into covering. Beer is usually required.

sick leave? what's that?

how about it's call the real world and you take care of your body and not get sick? Even if you do, suck it up and get to work, unless you're physically unable, then you'd need a doctor's note.

that's the policy :p

Where I used to work.... you just called or emailed in the morning you were going to be out.

Dr. notes were only needed if you were going to be out for awhile... although I think that was managers discression (sp?)

We weren't allow to accumulate sick time... use it or lose it. 6 days over a rolling 12 month period.

Vacations were the same... no carryover / accumulation

yeah, if i end up with prostate cancer, i'll get paid full salary for 4 months while i burn my "sick leave"
if i am out longer than that, then i'd switch to short term disability which pays 80% or 100% , i forget. i think that is another 4 or 6 months

then if i still can't work, i'd have to fall back to long term disability which only pays 60% of my salary

Due to abuse. Many even higher paying career people need to provide proof for any 'sick day' taken pre/post holiday or vacation.

Our company used to allow 5 sick occurances. Each occurance could be up to 6 business days (giving an associate over a week to get well). It was finally pulled and we now have only 5 sick days as something like 10% of the company took 30 days days every year.

Surprisingly since this revision, no significant portions has needed more than their sick time. Now short term disability needs to be used to cover longer sick periods.

Better to stay home than make other people sick...

I just call my manager in the morning and tell him I don't feel like coming to work. He doesn't care.

We have no sick leave. No work; no pay.
When we are sick, call in as soon as we know, then let him know when you're ready to come back.

I was sick once last year on my Friday, so I missed one scheduled day.
I was sick again this year (102 fever), missed Thursday and Friday and should have missed Monday as well. I was not 100% on the Monday coming back...

At my work we just call in to the manager. We can do pretty much whatever we want with regard to sick days or personal days, so long as we don't abuse the system.

I call in if I'm sick. Company policy says if you're out more than 3 days in a row, you can't come back w/o a dr note.

We can just call in and let them know we won't be coming in that day. I say if they want a doctors note for one day just tell them you have diarrhea. People dont mess with diarrhea.

I just call my manager in the morning and tell him I don't feel like coming to work. He doesn't care.

again, that's called being an adult and taking care of yourself. If you were hit by a car, yes, obviously you will use your sick days. If it was a SARS outbreak, yes, don't come in and give it to everyone else. If it's one of those strange everyone gets it Flu, again, you will be struggling to get out of bed so get yourself to the doctor and get a note and stay home. But anything like getting common flu/cold/upset stomach/food poisoning/headache...whatever other excuses(I've heard them all), that's your fault. You're an adult and didn't take care of your body and allowed yourself to get sick. Those people I have no sympathy for. Be an adult, take better care of yourself. Cold/flu can be easily combated and prevented. Pay attention to your local weather and carry a jacket if you think you will need it. upset stomach/food poisoning again can be easily avoided...if you're an adult, you should know what foods will make you sick and don't eat out 7 days a week. A guy from work basically eats out 7 days a week, 3 meals a day, never eats any vegies and wonders why he's sick all the time? calls in sick all the time and said he spent the night blowing chunks out the mouth and rear end...give me a break.... he's also the kind of guy who will spend 3 hours in the storage room sweating it out and then spend 20 minutes in front of the server room AC vent...idiot.

even recreational/sports injuries are all cause by your choice to participate in these activities. you're an adult, you should know to be more careful...I laff when people come back from vacations and get sick or injured and complain that the company has strict sick day policies....are you kidding me? you went on a vacation to relax, not subject your body to physical harm or party/drink for all 7 days and not expect to get sick when you come back. Don't try to call in and fake being sick either...that's just pathetic.

I'm not venting at you, just people at work and the moronic reasons and tactics that they use to milk the sick leave policy. corporates should impose a "do no harm to yourself" policy and if you don't, then you're gone. Look at professional atheletes...their contracts prevent them from doing stupid things...sample NFL contract:

"A player is potentially responsible to return bonus money if he sustains injury as a result of a non-football activity -- as a result of participating in hazardous activities which involve a significant risk of personal injury and are non-football in nature."

moral of the story? be a responsible professional adult and yes, I also believe there should be regular drug tests done on everyone on a bi-annual basis. Not to mention the fact that HR should do a regular annual credit/background re-check on everyone. Some idiots really don't deserve employment...

My company doesn't have a specified number of sick days because there is no way to specify beforehand how many days you're going to be sick in a year. They also don't ask for doctor's notes because they don't hire incompetent slackers.

In other words, my company doesn't suck. I suggest you start working for a non-sucky company, it's worth it.
