What's your backup solution?

I'm a consultant, so I generally carry a lot of sensitive client information on my laptop. I also have sourecode for hundreds of projects that I need to have available most of the time; never know when a client is going to call. I used to copy everything to a server with a DLT drive, and the tapes were cycled every few weeks. I've just now started backing up to DVDs, and those DVDs are stored in a safe in an undisclosed location. It's not an enterprise backup solution, but it works for me.

Anyone else favor the DVD method?

my personal solution is:

i have nothing that important that if it goes away it will make me cry like a little girl

but otherwise, the external hard drives they sell now come with some pretty good software

also, making occasional images (like Ghost) of the pc's i use works ok

Legato Networker backing up to a Dell 132T SDLT tape library. I didn't like LTO cause it wouldn't be compatible with all of the old DLT tapes I've got stacked up around my desk.

I like the idea of cycling between 4 or 5 USB 2.0 hard drives. that way you backup to a different hard drive each day of the week.

I've got a backup server in the basement that spools backups onto its local hard drive and then writes them out to a pair of DLT libraries. I also use a couple of freestanding DLT drives to back up individual projects, and then I also do backups onto various extra hard drives I have lying around (mostly 5400 RPM IDE drives and 7200 RPM SCSI drives).

Since I'm getting more computers with USB2.0 these days, I think I may mount an IDE swap cage into a USB2.0 enclosure and start using that for more tasks.

I use an 80gB SATA harddrive for all my day to day stuff, and a 40gB ATA66 drive as a 'storage' drive where I keep more important data and backups. I also keep backups of the really important stuff on CD-Rs.

I use ViceVersa on the duallie in my sig. I have enough drives in my spanned volume to back up all important data on the 250GB and 36.7 raptor in my main rig. Spanned volumes are about as unreliable as RAID 0, but they're easy to upgrade and it's a second copy, so the world won't end if I lose a drive. 🙂
