I don't have a 5 year rate of return yet, so what's your 3 year annualized rate of return?

Mine's 4.29%. Seems pretty bad, considering the expense ratios on my funds.

i can get only 2 yrs return which was 8.6%

not sure if expense ratios are already taken into account - they better be.

your actual rate of return is way bigger, if employer is doing matching.

I've only been working for 2 years. Mine shows a return of 57.99% over that time period. The thing is, I got REALLY lucky, for the first 6 months of my job I was only contributing 2% of my income to it, I finally decided to jump up to 8% around November of 2008, many investments bottomed around that time and started to come back up. I doubt I could come anywhere near that amount of return if I had tried to do it.

While that return sounds impressive even with everything shifting up I only have about $10k in there. Oh well, not too terrible considering how long I've been working...

What fund is that?
PTTRX PIMCO TOTAL RETURN INSTL ~25%
PRFDX EQUITY INCOME FUND ~25%
TRRKX RETIREMENT 2045 FUND ~50%

The day after the the Chinese market took the 8% hit, I moved everything to PTTRX (bonds). Slowly, I reallocated my funds to stocks to the above.

Here's the performance of my old 401(k) that I haven't been contributing to since 8/08:

For the quarter ending 12/31/2009 6.13%
For the 12 months ending 12/31/2009 37.70%
For the 3 years ending 12/31/2009 -13.77%

The reason why the 3 year return is owned is because I would increase my contributions and top off my account to the IRS max during the last quarter of each year for 2005, 2006, and 2007. Also, for that job, my bonus and pay increase would come into effect during the last quarter, so it was a double whammy.

Just to give you guys an idea of when a huge amount of my contributions to that account would hit - the S&P 500 index was in the 1200-1250 range during the last quarter of 2005, the 1350-1400 range during the last quarter of 2006, and the 1450-1550 during the last quarter of 2007. Right now, with the S&P just under 1200, I'm lucky to be down just 14% over the 3 year period. I just looked at the 3 year return on that account for the period ending 3/31/2009...right when the lowest point hit, -62.94%.

The 401(k) for the job I have now has been doing quite well though over the past year. I invested into it quite heavily from the time I started the job in 9/08 and am sitting on a net gain between the two 401(k)'s.

401k only goes back 2 years. 13.68% but most of that is due this account holds my bond allocation with part international. adding in all accounts, it looks like over the last 2 years i had mid-single digit percentile growth as my total grew by more than just contributions but not tremendously so.

Statement Period: 03/27/2008 to 03/26/2010

This Period -7.6%

Ouch.

Forgot to check another of my 401k's. That one is at +42.8% rate of return for the past 3 years. Much better!

many that traded out of fear show great returns. I am in the 40's but left my money in a target fund and another high yield. I kept my money in and despite my company match ending 3 years ago, I have 50% more money due to yields.

in funds shares are king.

I haven't had mine for 3 years yet.
But for the funds I'm in,
3 year annualized returns range from -4% to +4%
1 year returns range from 40% to 65%

5.8% for the last 3 years. Not bad considering how much of a hit I took last year. I have only had mine for 3 years though, so it didn't hurt too bad.

None of the investments in my 401k rollover IRA are more than 2 years old at this point. I bought most of them at the top of the market, and watched them get slaughtered. :(

Right now, the returns for my funds are varying from -12.8% to +29.61%
