Athlon 2800
512mb ram
80gb 7,200rpm
Radeon 7000 32mb
DVD+RW

Push button......lights come on, fans spin, hard drive spins, but nothing happens. No video, no HD seek/read, and the DVD door won't open.

If I disconnect the IDE cable to the DVDRW, the door hiccups a few times, then eventually opens & will open consistently. If I plug the IDE cable back in, it won't do anything and when I remove the IDE cable again, it hiccups a few times again 'til it opens.

Everything looks EXCELLENT & computer's only a year old......(I built it for a buddy). I thought it was a video thing but I don't have an extra video card here at work & I'm not sure it ain't somethin' else? (Yes, I pulled Cmos battery, jumpered JP1, reseated EVERYTHING and all that. Nada).

Possibly a motherboard issue or power supply issue? Check the voltage off your Powersupply with a voltmeter and make sure it's regulating voltage properly.

Any beeps?

Remove the Vid card and restart...you should get beeps.

Remove the RAM and restart...you should get beeps.

Remove the CPU and restart...you should get beeps.

If none of this happens it's either the motherboard or power supply.

First of all, start with the basics, disconnect everything and pull out all cards except the video card and see if it will POST. If it will not POST and everything comes on and seems ok, good chance the CPU is dead. Touch your finger to the heatsink and see if it gets warm, if not then it is toast. If the heatsink does get warm, pull out all of the memory and see if it will spew beep codes, if so it is probably the video card then but since there is no HDD activity, I doubt it.

Ya, I'm thinkin' you're right! PSU is ok, it was tested heavily before I put it in......(the case I used came w/o PSU so I put in my tried & true Achieve 550W (24A on 12v+ rail...yeehaa), but the mobo's just an old Fry's combo mobo. (N2u400A nforce).

I *think* I still have another one of these mobos at home so I will regrettably (sigh) probably have to swap mobos & see if that does it. :(

sounds like a bad board. although when i lost my first socket a board, the drives wouldn't spin up unless i disconnected them from the mobo. check each part seperatly. is the drive ok? take the ram and memtest it on a different computer. i'd like to be hopeful but it sounds like a bad board. and one more things, this should have gone into Techinal Support, not OT.

Thanks gang.

(Yes, I'm well aware of Gen Hardware/Tech Support). I notoriously, accidentally post in the forum I'm browsing at the time.

I'd apologize, but........well, no I wouldn't, I'm too old......;)

I'll letchy'all know what I find.

P.S. (If mod can move this thread to the forum of their choice, that'd be great)
