What's wrong with the news server?

Ever since my ISP started using their own news server instead of @home, news has been kind of messed up. When i enter a newsgroup, it says, for example, "Downloading 1000 headers." Then i get the little progress bar, which quickly climbs to 40-50% and then disappears. So it downloads only half of the headers or less all the time. What's up with that?

Can you still access the @home news server instead or is it automatically changed to your ISPs?

I think they filter out some of the header so won't be able to download a complete binaries file. I use to download movies from news server but not no more because of it.
