what's wrong with the ali chipset?

i keep reading peoples posts about how bad the ali chipset is (performance wise) but the reviews and benchmarks that i read show it as being very competative with the amd761 and via266 chipsets .when used with ddr2100 memory and 133 fsb
this is really the only way that i or most people i know would configure a system, particularly with new systems. ddr2100 memory is so cheap and the motherboard prices arent that different, usually cheaper for the ali based chipsets. plus no problem with the sb live.
is there something that i'm missing about this chipset that would keep people from using it in the above configuration?

It looks like the new ALi MaGiK1 B0 stepping is on par with the SiS735... Now you just have to find a mobo mfg that uses the new stepping. 😉

The magik chipset is now where near the performance of the SIS 735. The SIS 735 is the highest performing chipset for the Atrhlon ahile the Magik might be the worst. 🙁

i've noticed a bunch of ali boards putting out some good performance...they're not very common on the market tho...in fact, i can only think if the asus and iwill board off hand.

people generally tend to stay away since kt266 boards cost roughly the same (maybe even cheaper?) and put out comparable performance..and the sis boards are even better and cheaper (tho few w/ no o/c options)

because sis' is the fastest while ali's is the slowest, doesn't mean there's some huge performance difference...the boards are still pretty close...the mem bandwidth tends to be higher on the ali while latencies are as well however...all ddr chipsets are relatively close now tho

Damn foofoo, you took my cat's handle! :|

Back to the topic... The performance gap between ALi and other big names on Athlon platforms are very small, or even unnoticeable on a regular use basis. But I do believe driver support in the future plays a major role when choosing a chipset. For example, the huge upset of the Savage 2000 video chip.

Great card + poor driver = incompatibile future hardware/software.

After all, you get what you paid for.

I don't think there's anything wrong with the ALi.
I used an Asus A7A266 for a while and it was a very stable board.
You don't have Via to deal with either 😉

Seriously though, I think it's more a matter that there are very vew Ali magik1 boards out there, and those that are aren't that high on features.

interesting...the ali magik is domination station

these two chipsets are dirt cheap - what's taking these retarded mobo manufactures so long to adopt them?

hi majewski9,

<< The magik chipset is now where near the performance of the SIS 735. The SIS 735 is the highest performing chipset for the Atrhlon ahile the Magik might be the worst. >>

the benchmarks that i find and the ones quoted by splice show something different. do you have ones that i could look at that show the ali as the worst in the configuraion shown?
