What's wrong with my sound card

The regular games and music playing is fine, but when I go to the EAX console and try to use certain effects like male/female voice conversion, I can't play any sound, and as soon as I disable the special effects, then the sound returns. Furthermore, I cannot play the dvd audio sample disc that came with the retail box. I got to the menu and can only access the help section of it. I already have the most current driver for the sound card. Any help is appreciated.
