My parents Vizla is tremendously overweight, so she's not terribly active to begin with, but today she won't even move to eat or drink (even if it's right next to her), and her breathing is very labored. I think she's about 5 or 6. Any ideas?

if was your mom or other immediate relative in the same situation, would you ask ATOT?

call a vet dude

uh.... a vet, ya think!?

Edit: sorry, that was rude.

Try this:

If it's not a bad IDE cable, you really should ask a veterinarian ASAP!

You mean there are no certified vets perusing the forums on ATOT? :Q

I don't have any idea why my parents won't take her to the vet. Seems dumb to me. I'm kinda pissed they let her get this way in the first place. When a dog gets 30+lbs overweight, you'd think they'd keep the food away from her.

I used to work as a veterinary technician.

If a dog like the one you described was brought in, we'd do an EKG (Electrocardiogram).

If her legs seem like they are swelling (edema) then it's almost certainly congestive heart failure.

Good luck.

This reminds me of my dog :( He had a stroke.

Was unfortunate, he was so young... and he was incredibly healthy too.

RIP Grizz :(

Update

She has died. Must have been a heart attack of sorts I'm assuming. Stupid fvcking parents. They'll probably blame it on something else. GRRRRRRRRRRRRRR..... They just don't get it. If you are out in the woods in the winter time and get shot (obviously theoretical), it's not the cold that kills you, it's the damn gun. The dog died cause she was fat and they're at fault because they kept feeding her. :|

I'm really sad - I really liked that dog. All it would have taken to stop her weight problem would have been to cut off the food (they have an open feeder). :brokenheart:

Sadly, some people can't handle responsibility. Sorry for the loss. Get your parents a plastic plant & be glad you came out alright.

Sorry about your loss.

Now shove some food down your parents throats until they become fat asses and POP.

Sorry about the dog dying. Your parents didn't seem to care too much about it. If my cat showed any of those symptoms, she would have been on the way to the vet in a heartbeat.

It should say on the bag how much food to give a day, dogs are dumb in that way, if its always available, the will gorge on it...

Usually the dogs do fine with an open feeder... but they also previously had a ton of outdoor area to exercise, so there was a balance. They got another dog that would always run off, so they fenced in a tiny area for them outside. Needless to say, the big dog didn't have enough room to exercise, but more than enough food. Stupid, stupid, stupid. They should have gotten rid of the open feeder if they didn't want to have a larger area for the dogs.

Give your parent's information to the local humane societies and such so they won't let them get an dkill another animal. Your parents are dumbasses (no offense).

None taken. I'm simply appalled at their lack of concern. Poor dog, she was probably in pain the entire day.
