What's wrong with my new Sony 52x cd-rom???

It got decent reviews that the DAE speed was around 20x. But when I try it, I never get higher than 8x MAX. I've done everything. I enabled DMA, disabled it, and re-enabled it, nothing. 🙁

8x is hella slow. 🙁

Is this my fault? Or is the drive faulty? Or am I doing something wrong? 🙁
