What's wrong with my eye?

My left eye has always been the weaker of the two, but it seems as though it's gotten worse over the past couple of years. This month I switched from contacts to glasses and that's helped a lot, but there's still something wrong I think. I can easily perceive differences in color and brightness when quickly closing and opening my eyes in succession with everything seeming a bit dimmer and more washed out from my left eye. I also seem to have more trouble focusing my left eye, a situation that becomes maddeningly apparent when I read for extended periods of time. I've been to two eye doctors over the past two years and neither one found anything out of the ordinary.

This sucks and all, but I figured it wasn't the end of the world. Now I'm noticing other things... I was holding my right eye closed a while ago to contemplate the impairment of the left when I became aware of the fact that everything through that eye seemed to be blinking very rapidly. I mean VERY rapidly on and off, from vision to blackness at a speed that's on the order of a cheap CRT monitor. Then over the course of about a minute the vision through that eye just went out and all I could see was the room light coming through the eyelid of my right eye. For a moment it was like my left eye wasn't there at all. This seriously freaked me out and I blinked, which somehow caused the vision to return to my eye. I waited a while longer and soon I couldn't see from that eye again. Strangely enough, passing my hand through where my field of vision should have been also seemed to "restart" my eye. Needless to say, this worries me.

Is this normal? Am I going blind in my left eye?

If you think your vision isn't important enough for the ER that's fine with me

With both eyes open everything's fine except for the imbalances I've been living with for a couple of years now. I haven't suddenly had an attack or anything, but every time I close my right eye for a while my vision winks out. It's distressing, but I don't think it's exactly an emergency. Also, I wonder if it hasn't always been like this and I just never noticed because I didn't spend much time staring at stuff with my right eye closed.

How about going to teh friggin doctor? Optometrist? Ophthalmologist?

That's a definite affirmative. I'm going to schedule an appointment tomorrow. Just wondering if anyone has heard of something like this before.

Fuck, I was going to post my own eye problem thread but now it would be viewed as a shitty parody.

Oh well, at least I'm not going to be blind in a few weeks like you. I'm feeling better already!

Almost sounds like some kind of optic nerve compression or ischemia, which is loss of oxygen to a region- in this case either the visual cortex of the brain or somewhere along the path....with your symptoms, definitely worth a trip to the ophthalmologist or family doctor.

Are ya having any headache, dizziness, ringing in ears, anything like that? Any other symptoms other than blurred vision you need to go to the ER.

How old are ya? Do you smoke cigarettes? Drink heavily? Anything like that?
