what's wrong with my DVD drive?

It was working fine about a month ago and now everytime i try to play a DVD, it either won't play, stop in the middle, stop at a certain scene while the rest of the movie is continuing, or freeze. I have no idea what I did, but I did a system file check and a Scandisk to make sure that all my files are good. It's currently set as a slave drive to my CD-ROM drive (I had it the other way around with the DVD as the master and the CD-ROM as the slave, but it still didn't work). I'm thinking that I did something to my computer, and I'm considering a format, but I would use that as a last resort. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what my problem is? Might it be a busted DVD drive? I have the Pioneer 106s. Thanks for any input.

That does not sound like a hardware problem. What software are you using to play the DVD, and in what OS?

Sorry, forgot to include that info. I'm running Windows XP, and I've tried PowerDVD XP, WinDVD 2000, and Windows Media Player. I recently bought Girl, Interrupted, Romeo Must Die and Reindeer Games, and none of them will play. I got The Fast and The Furious to work a few days ago, but now nothing is playing. Thanks for the reply corky-g :)

to help with the diagnosis -- download this... it is a dvd ripping app, try to rip one of your dvd's to your hard drive. if it is able to rip the whole thing without a problem, then your drive still works

It ripped successfully. I originally thought that something was wrong with my software because I started to notice that some of my settings started to change in Windows. I think I'm going to have to format in the near future. I'm pretty interested in this decrypter software. Now that I ripped the DVD, how do I play it or create a Divx file?
