What's wrong with my DVD burner

OK, here is my setup: Magicspin 8x DVD-+RW in Bytecc USB2 enclosure and Averatec 1.3 Celeron notebook. The d*mn thing writes CDRs just fine (even though not more than 16X; when I try faster I get underrun for the duration of burning), but I'm still unable to burn one working DVD. I tried 4x+RW Ridata that came with the unit, as well as old 1X-RW Ritec. None seem to work.

First, I tried Nero Ultra 6.3 Burning Rom with Ritec. The Juliet option on DVD-video is dim (can't be ticked). First disc refused to burn at all. Then I tried to use Nero Express. Disc burned (took an hour at 1x) but won't play anywhere including my comp CD-Rom.

Then, I tried 4x Ridata. It started burning with insane underrun (keeping it at 26% all the time), and somewhere in 4 hours gave me a failure.

I will admit I'm a complete novice when it cames to dvd burning, but I know it's not supposed to be that painful. Does it look like hardware or disc problems? I flashed the Writer with the latest firmware, maybe I shouldn't have? Any help is very apreviated.

Are the usb 2.0 drivers installed on the laptop? To find out goto device manager under usb controllers and look for standard "enhanced" pci to usb host controller. If the enhanced is missing you only have 1.1 drivers installed.

I had my board that had usb 2.0 for 5 months before buying my first usb 2.0 device. That is when I figured out 1.1 driver was installed. My bios had 2.0 enabled but the drivers were not. I don't remember what I did exactly to fix it off of the top of my head.

Check to see if that is what it is first.

Thanks for all suggestions. I do have enhanced controller. Tried 3 brands of DVDR-WRs, so far was only able to produce one non-coaster. Very painful experience:brokenheart:
