What's wrong with my coffee? Sour taste to it.

Never been much of a coffee drinker. Sometimes it's months in between having a cup. Well I picked up some coffee crystals the last time I went grocery shopping and since I hardly drink the stuff I just went with some cheapo kroger brand. I don't know what is was but the first cup I had was horrible so I poured it away. Later that week I tried it again and the first half of the cup was ok but the second half started tasting sour again.

What's going on? Is it because I cheaped out and got cheap coffee crystals? The 'I don't know how old' sugar I used? Or is it all in my head?

<--- will not drink instant coffee...

if you need single serve, buy coffee bags which brew 1 cup at a time
(comes in a box like tea-bags)

Oh, sorry. Was that YOUR cup? I REALLY had to go.

coffee crystals? There's the whole problem. That shit is NOT coffee. It just bears a very slight resemblance to the real thing. Kind of like powdered milk does to REAL milk.

You have to use water instead of urine.

Thanks for trying that and letting me know. Now I know not to do what you did.

And knowing is half the battle!

I had that issue with milk that had gone bad.

So I had a nice coffee/cottage cheese blend. It was like 3am, in the dark and I was running to get ready to leave.

Sour generally means the temperature is too low. If you're using a cheap drip machine, that's probably the problem.

It could also be the coffee as many have a high acidity to them, but I'm doubting this is the case for coffee crystals.

Your solution:

1) Get a better method/machine. The temperature needs to be able to consistently hit ~200F.
2) Get better coffee.

There's more to it, but that's the idea.

i never knew the sour taste was due to inadequate brewing.

I'm no coffee snob, but I wouldhave to agree with this. Instant coffee is pretty nasty.

I love Folger's instant. I'm sure many will be quite disgusted with this, but I actually like it more than normal coffee much of the time.

Your machine's lines could have build up causing poor taste. Look up how to clean your system out and your problems will most likely go away. I agree about under temperature but if it just started happening out of nowhere my money is on build up in the lines.

I can get drinking it for quick and convenient caffeination, but can't understand people preferring the taste of it.

Absolutely. Like I said though, it does depend. Certain coffees, like highland Africans, for example, have a very acidic component that can taste sour to some people. That depends on the way the coffee is roasted. Too light and it begins to get a bit like a lemon.

But, if it's truly sour and not a crisp acidity, it's almost always the temperature.
