was working fine... except needed adjusted (wasn't engaging until the last 1/10 of pedal travel) adjusted it to engage about halfway up because it was slipping.. this was last week sometime.

last night as I was shifting from 1st to 2nd I couldn't go into 2nd gear... like maybe the clutch cable broke or the clutch arm from the tranny was bent or something. not only that, but it was slipping REALLY bad... pulled over and everything looked fine.. adjusted it back to how it was (just so I could shift..) but it still grinds going into gear and is still slipping.

what gives? maybe the fingers on the pressure plate are bent somehow?

(1991 integra)

Clutch is shot. Replace master and slave. 14 years is a long life for a clutch.

drop the integra, they blow chunks. not worth the money imho. it sounds like your tranny isn't wanting to shift. check the fluid. and check the pressure plate, probably got a nice sheen to it. plates get a wonderful sheen when you ride the clutch, which includes but not limited to leaving your foot resting on the clutch pedal.

If your clutch is slipping really bad, that means te clutch wants to die. It's probably shot dude, time for a new one.

..sounds like there's no more friction material left on the clutch plate and your spinning metal to metal..get it to the shop before you damage the flywheel.

Bleed the lines, there maybe air in there. Causes simular problems.
It needs profession help if you want to keep it for awhile longer.

Replacing the clutch is a $300-400 job. The car is still worth about $2000 if in good condition. Don't know what you mean by finding another car for less.

I love some of the advice in here...

OP - I adjusted the clutch CABLE.

response - clutch shot - replace master and slave.

other - bleed the line.

Does anyone understand that if it's a cable, it's not hydraulic. Since it's not hydraulic, there's no master nor slave cylinder to replace. Nor is there a hydraulic line to bleed.

Not to mention, slipping clutch <> bleed the line NOR replace master/slace cylinders.

And to boot - replacing the master/slace cylinders <> replacing the clutch (ie "clutch is shot, replace master and slave")

Now to go make a note NEVER to post a car question here...

Edit - And earlier today someone said to "replace the distributor" when changing plug wires. WTF PEOPLE?? For technical types, there's a bunch here that don't know jack about cars...

that was me...i was thinking cap and rotor, as you pointed out to me...i was just suggesting something that is normally done during a tune-up...i.e. changing plugs and wires

A cable clutch on a 1991 Honda product? Show me the pages from the service manual that verify that, because I am _highly_ skeptical. Hydraulic clutches were in wholesale use since about 1980 and I would be very surprised if _any_ 1991 car used a cable clutch.

ZV

EDIT: Or maybe the German cars I work on were just that far ahead.

So I guess you're "very surprised" then...

BTW... 1986 911 has a clutch cable.
The 1986 911 was also first engineered around 1960 (first production version in '64, and prototypes well before then). Both the 944 series and the 928 had hydraulic from inception. BMW was using Hydraulic clutch hardware across their entire line by the 1980's as well.

Frankly, I'm very surprised that Honda was using such ancient technology in 1991.
