Whats wrong with my cdrom drives?

putting a cd in my cdrw or my DVD drive results in disaster. my cdrw spins-stops-spins-stops-spins-stops-spins-stops-spins-stops-crashes my computer, and my dvd drive just won't open files on the cd. whenever a cd is in a drive, it gets the windows generic "no icon" icon, instead of what its supposed to have. What can i do to fix this?

My specs: see my rig link below

Edit: I also had this problem with my plextor drive, which i RMA'd because i thought it was a problem with the drive.

Well if its happening on several different cdrom drives then the problem is likely your OS. Format & Reinstall. :)

Could be your motherboard controller. Load up in dos with cdrom support and see if your cd drives work then.

i booted to dos and the drives work. formatting would be a huge pain, is it absolutely necessary?

i might be able to trace this problem back to my last format, but it certainly has gotten worse and worse over time, not just one day it didn't work. cds were taking longer and longer and having more and more difficulty spinning up and reading. Im in win98se.

Something with Win98 is likely the cause if it works fine under DOS.

If you dont want to format because you have files you dont want to lose. You could do a parallel install of Win98 to another folder, or install Win98 over itself.
