Whats wrong with my cars tranmission?

I drive a 94 Ford Tempo with 82000 miles. Everytime it down shifts at around 40mph, the car jerks a little and it slows down with the feeling like the brakes are being applied lightly. Feels like the transmission is dragging and slow the car down. Anyone have any idea with is causing this??

Check the transmission fluid level and color..if it's smells burned, then it might be a sign of something serious....might be time to change it and the transmission filter as well. I did this on my '93 Camry - it was nasty in there with all the friction plate material in the bottom of the pan. Be sure to clean the pan and magnets too. After doing this, it shifts as smooth as the day I drove it off the lot.

started jerking fro 1st to 2nd, had the fluid and filter changed and it never happened again

Yeah, since the car's only 11 years old, it still ought to be totally trouble free!
