my check engine light is on, and its becuz of a sensor. or so i have been told.

It pretty much means something is wrong, and it could be damn near anything.

Seriously, take it to somewhere that does free checks. There's no way for us to tell or even guess.

I thought that the light comes on for a specific reason. I am not too much into cars..

If there are virtually a large number of things that can cause this, then I am sorry. I think I am looking for the answer in the wrong place.

Yeah, it could be any number of things.

 
Look in your manual. Normally it can mean different things based on if it's always on, if it flashes, if it blinks in some pattern, etc. Could just be the gas cap isn't on right, could be some sensor is bad, could be anything.

Check engine light means something needs to be checked. Mainly the engine.

Not trying to be a smart allek answer, but it really is as simple as that. I'd get it checked ASAP. Could be something minor, could be major.

LoL 😀

The check engine light comes on when the computer notices a sensor out of range to a predetermined amount of time or a controlling device didn't operate properly.

Has someone scan your computer in the car for the codes and post them here is the year, make, and model and I'll try to help you understand the problem.

Open hood, verify that the engine is still there.
Close hood. All done.
 
Check engine light has mostly to do with emmission. It could be as simply as a bad gas cap to bad catalytic converter, etc. Get you code read or call Miss Cleo. Once you have the code which should be P####, google it and hopefully you have will have your answer.
