I used to dual boot between WinXP from a RAID controller and Linux from onboard IDE. Then XP started acting up and complained about one of my IDE FAT32 partitions. So I erased the partition. XP still acted up. So I cleaned out the whole IDE drive, repartitioned it, reformatted it, and put Linux back on.
Booted into rescue mode from the XP CD, did a FIX MBR. Reboot. Bootloader (GRUB) can't find an OS other than Linux. Rebooted into rescue mode, did a FIXBOOT. Reboot. Again, no Windows. Rescue mode again, did both FIXMBR and FIXBOOT. Reboot. Still no Windows.
Zeroed out the MBR (erasing GRUB and anything else that had been on it), repeated above rescue steps. Still no Windows. Reinstalled GRUB. Linux still boots, but for the life of me I can't get Windows to put its bootloader on the MBR and/or have it find XP on the RAID controller (don't know for sure which of those it fails to do).
Edit: Now GRUB doesn't start either. Might be a boot sector virus, huh? So now the question is how does one recover the boot sector using only the WinXP CD or a Linux boot CD? (Linux can get on the 'net, so I might could download stuff to use in Linux.)
Edit2: NM, looks I had an IRQ conflict in the BIOS between my SATA RAID controller and vidcard and something else. Either it just recently decided to conflict or the conflict just recently gave it problems, and I can't seem to straighten it out.
Anyone want a Promise RAID card and two Raptors?
