What's wrong with my 5200 ???

Ok, I just got a GeForce FX 5200, and it's rediculously slow...

I get like 5400 pts in 3Dmark01 whereas I was getting close and over 10 000 with my GeForce 3...

The problem is not limited to only that though. Halo : Combat Evolved is unplayable, Need For Speed : Underground is also incredibly Slow, same goes for UT2004. When I play videos, it kinda does like a game with V-Sync off would (the horizontal seperation of the monitor) but it does this diagonaly, from one corner to another. The Need For Speed Underground 2 demo is simply unplayable. I get well below 1 FPS and the few images that do show up (gages and some text) flicker on and off.

Does anyone know what might cause this ?


(It's not a HUGE problem if there's no answer to this cuz I'm bringing the card back in a few weeks anyways, as I'm waiting for my exchange Radeon 9800 Pro... but still would be nice to play games other than solitaire).
 
Sorry to say, but the GF5200 is the slowest card Nvidia is offering since almost a year or so..
Even the ultra is like a Ati 9200 non pro or whatever..
If you want to play games, you atleast need a FX5600 or a FX5700LE would do..

NFS Underground 2 demo? Didn't know it was available yet, nice! 🙂
 
There is nothing wrong with your card, it is performing exactly how it is supposed to perform. That's the truth, plain and simple.
 
The FX5200 is not much of an upgrade from a geforce 3, but an fx5200 ultra would be, if it was at 40 bucks or so. The 5200Ultra is faster then any geforce 3 and full fledged radeon 8500.
 
Oh well... I'm still bringing it back for a full refund very soon.... 😛

I'm gonna keep doing this for a while until I get my Radeon9800 Pro back (which was one hell of an upgrade from my GeForce 3)

Now, time to hijack my own post... would the upgrade from 9800 Pro (most likely flashed to XT) to an X800 Pro be a worthwhile investment ?

You'd definitely notice a bump in speed, just as you would going from a 9800 Pro to any of the ATI/Nvidia flagship GPUs. But I don't think it'd be worth dropping 400 dollars on an AGP card at this time. If you've already got a decent system built around that 9800 Pro, I'd wait a while and bump up to a PCIe equipped mobo and card in 05.

But thats just my opinion.
 
9800 Pro will play any game PERFECTLY.

X800 is a big waste of money when next year ur gonna slap urself in the head. X800 / 6800 = more than what you need.

you should have gone directly for 9800pro, damn i love this card but its just that i can't afford for now... 5200 is a major failure for nvidia...definitely not suited for 3D apps... i bougth this one and i sold it rigth away for 50% less.... 🙁 got myself a 9550, been much happier than the 5200... 🙂
 
lol most of the games you mentioned run fine on my geforce 2 mx 400 😛 especially NFS under 🙂

Ok, here's what happened (to clarify the whole 9800 thing).

I purchased a card from e-bay thinking I was buying a 9800 Pro... turns out, it's a sapphire 9800.... non-pro.... with 128 bit memory. Some of you may remember my post about that. Anyways, I e-mailed sapphire about the exchange program and now my 128bit 9800 is on it's way to california along with a 25$ check and they're gonna send me back a 256 bit 9800 Pro. But, in the meantime, I had no video card. So, I ran off to Future Shop (cuz of their 30 day money back / no questions asked policy) and grabbed what I thought would at least get me by for the time being... hence the 5200 was installed in my computer only to torture me every minute of my existence.

I can't wait till the 22nd when I'm going to return it and go to another store with similar policy and get me a better card... but, still... it has to be under a 9800 pro so that I may enjoy what will have been to me, the best graphics card to ever find rest in my AGP slot... 😛

The 5200 was not a major failure for nVidia. It was intended to be the FX equivalent for the GF3 and GF4's MX series... A card for non-gamers, which most likely makes up a very large part of their customer base. Why would someone who is just going to surf and do other 2D stuff only need a gaming card? The 5200 would have been a failure had it been nVidia's flagship card. However, we all know that they can make better cards, they are just more expensive. IMO, the real culprits in this are nVidia's board partners that market the 5200's as gaming cards and pair it with 128MB of RAM. You get what you pay for, and you should educate yourself before buying anything.

 
5200 is 600 better that a 4600. 5200-4600=600 but never buy one especialy one with 256M VRAM makes U an ultra nob.

as i've said "definitely not for 3D apps" which is = card for non-gamers... 🙂
 
But consider this. He should be able to atleast play these games. U say they are unplayable? Or is that just u saying that they dont play like ud like em to play? A 5200 can PLAY halo just fine. Just not w/ everything up to anything decent.

A ti4600 is a much better card than an FX5200...
