What's wrong with living next to a jail?

And why on god's green earth does it bring down real estate? If I was an inmate and escaped....you'd think I'd hang around your "hood" to admire the sights and sounds?

They might rob your home in hopes of finding a weapon or disguise or something, I guess.

Well, a prison is not going to be built in an area that has any especially valuable setting in the first place, so many of the areas around prisons would be less expensive based on landscape/location alone.

Or steal a car to escape in ... or spot your wife/gf/sister/mom/daughter & stop off for a quickie etc... this kind of stuff happens all the time.

Well they want more prisons, just never were they live.

If you asked them if they had a choice between a military base and a jail, which one do you think they prefer?

A military base of course. I love to be the first target of a nuke or an air raid. Matter of fact, I'm planning to move to Hawaii as we speak. And do you want to know how much a house in Hawaii cost?

I would think next to a prison would be one of the safest places. I mean, if you escaped from jail, would you really go next door and try to hide? I'd be more concerned if I was in a neighboring suburb than living right next to it.

I'm sure many men here will give up a mighty fight to save their wives.

Our prison is in the middle of the desert. Nobody lives withing 50 miles, so I doubt it affected property values THAT much ;)

Who the hell wants to live next to a jail? Given the choice of living next to a prison or not for the same house, neighborhood and money, which would you choose? I'm guessing you'd choose not to live next to the prison...and that's why demand for land around prisons go down, thus lowering prices around the prison.

Then he'd probably go screaming in fear by an aggressive, non-feminine male.

S'funny: the nearest prison to where I live is in Kingston. As near as I can tell, the only two industries in that that town are the prisons (major federal penetentiaries for both men and women) and the university. I find that somewhat amusing.

And the respective effects on property values are somewhat similar, from what I've heard.
