I picked up a Compaq desktop.. the staples variety.. 1.7gig p4.

It boots up, installs Windows, but after the first reboot, it randomly blue screens with no module/error code faulted. After this, every time it boots I get the "select if you want to boot in safe or normal mode" screen, followed by a blue screen with no error faulted.

I have swapped HD/Ram..I ahve installed an external hd controller.. i have tried different XP cds..

Ideas?

I stole it from my last job from the 'spanked' pile... Figured it just needed a controller.

It was a clients old workstation.. it worked fine.. then one day it started doing this.. I swapped parts, did the same thing.. Swapped controller and it didnt stop.. It still boots and *begins* the install... which is bizzare.

None the less, there are only so many things that can go wrong, and they are cheap enough to replace.

Have you tried swapping the CPU? It could be fried.
EDIT: It's not really worth it any more. 1.7Ghz is fine if it's a Pentium M but not fine if it's a Willamette P4.
