Whats worse? 1 hr drive or 1.5 hour train commute

Train commute would be better hands down.

So long as you can get resonably close to your destination, the train by far. This does include access to other public transit systems, imho.

I'd take 1.5 hours driving over 1 hour on the train, let alone what the title asks (unless it's a magical pony-piloted train made of clouds, candy, and gold). Public transportation is icky.

Availability of parking is also a concern.

Sometimes, when I have to go into downtown SF, I'll take the BART from Dublin. (California, not Ireland)
It's actually faster than driving since traffic across the bridges usually sucks, and there's no parking hassles. However, it's kind of pricey...about $11 round-trip.

Is the drive in stop and go traffic on a nasty ugly freeway? Or on traffic-free roads with awesome views?

Is the train icky? Or will you have a comfy clean seat with wi-fi?

If the train has a comfy clean seat with wi-fi I'd take that over an hour drive, no matter how nice the drive was. I got a lot of reading and work done when I had a pleasant mass-transit commute, and quite enjoyed it.

1.5 hour train commute.

I reckon it would save a bit because the gas you would have to spend with a 1 hr. round trip would not add up to the train commute.

Plus you would get a lot of reading and work done. If you have an iphone/smart phone then play some games on there.

Depends on the train schedule. I've mostly commuted from NJ to jobs in NYC that had variable schedules, and it's a bitch to get out of work and not have another train until the morning. I hate sleeping in Penn Station.

You get used to driving, and you can't beat the flexibility. It's a toss-up financially, gas, tolls and parking go up and up, but so do train/bus fares.

i've taken public transportation for many years and do not have fond memories of it. is the train crowded? do you have to take bus/walk long distances when taking the train? all important factors.

I'd rather drive given how things are here.

It depends on the drive. I've had a hour commute for one job where I've driven 50 miles to work with low traffic each way, and an hour commute for another job where I drove 30 miles to work with hellish bumper to bumper traffic both ways.

The first commute was enjoyable, but the second commute sucked.

Seriously. I barely notice a one hour car drive.

I've taken NJ transit into NYC daily for about 7 years now. I walk 8 minutes from my house to the train station, about an hour on the train, and then about 20 minutes from the train station to work. So 90 minutes each way - and 30 minutes of that is fast walking. On the train I'm either reading, talking with friends, surfing or playing a game on my blackberry, or semi-sleeping. IMO that is far superior to driving in traffic.

I commute 1 hour (45 minutes express) by train to work in downtown Chicago. Trying to deal with stop and go traffic on 94 for two hours and paying $30 for parking is not particularly appealing. The train isn't that bad either, you get to sleep, read, work, whatever. I'm actually productive in the morning on the train compared to totally wasting my time in a car.
