What's with TV shows based on movies?

Is this some sort of new trend?

I read 'Blade' will be coming to Spike TV, while NBC is getting 'Friday Night Lights' and ABC is mulling Mrs. and Mrs. Smith for next fall. Its been awhile since 'Buffy' made the transition and I know this was successful back in the day ('Honeymooners', 'Love Boat' etc.) but with all the 80's shows becoming movies I thought the trend was reversed.

I guess there just aren't enough original ideas floating around.

There's also a greater chance of success because there's an established market. Potential profits are a much bigger factor than a lack of creativity.

All of those movies were something else before they were movies. Not like they were original ideas to begin with.

TV show, comic book, book.

TV and movie studios only make shows that they know they'll have a set audience for, and they'll make a profit. Taking a chance on something different isn't in their budget.
