What's with the Window folder in XP?

I know this may be a stupid question. Should there be a windows folder for XP. I am running a multi-boot system with 98se. SE is installed on C: (20gig)FAT32 and XP on D: (3gig)NTFS. I messed around installing different OS's thinking I could get my cheap Aopen Geforce 2 Deluxe to work with my older games. Seems the Nvidia drivers (latest) or directX 9.0 version is most likely not supporting this card or software or something (sorry, that's a different issue all together).

What I would like to do is clean up my freaken 3gig drive where XP's installed and leave it alone. I've changed the destination of the page file and Tempory Internet folder to c:. Also deleted several useless programs and I have all my applications on c:/. Actually I only really have a minimum install of XP on the 3 gig(D:\). I've gone through a cleaned off 1 gig which was about a week ago, now it's full again. What the heck causes this to fill up so quickley? Is that Windows folder nessesary? Is Windows XP using D:\windows\LastGood. It seems that way. Is there a way to switch the storage of certain items like this to store on my 20gig?

Oh ya, one more question,, how did the Roman's build their roads? just kidding.. Any information will prove helpful.

Thanks

One of the things that causes hardrive space to disappear quickly is System Restore.

Disable System Restore (System Control panel!) and then remove the "System Volume Information" folders from each of your partitions. (You will have to enable Explorer to show hidden and system files!)

On the other hand System Restore is one of the most useful features of Windows XP. By default it uses no more than 12% of the partition. I suspect that something else is filling up that WinXP partition. The single most common issue I've come across when gigs are disappearing on WinXP machines is where somebody has tried using the BootVis utility in an attempt to speed their boot times and didn't configure it properly. It just keeps logging if you do that, and the logs are huge. At any rate disabling System Restore might not be good advice if the system has been experiencing problems, and it sounds as though it has -- hence last known good.

If you really want Windows XP to work right why not just start over and install it on an adequate-sized partition? It's unlikely that you really need Win98 SE if WinXP works well on your system. Why not devote the whole drive to one OS, and then start doing some reading about how that OS works? It generally works better if you read first and then tweak.

Multi-booting is okay when its really needed, but it's not the best way to run a system -- especially when it's very likely that you can find one OS that will handle everything for you.

True,, I would love to keep just one OS. However, I know there are a few game that XP just won't run on my system. Sucks but what else is there to do. It's a long story but to put it brief, I was forced to take on a crappy AOpen system with and old PII MB that was already put together. It's going to take some time to put my dream system back together. We all know how that goes.

It's the first time I've used NTFS, do think this would cause problems with running some older win95 based software? I would have to assume yes, I kind of set it up that way without thinking. If so, is there a way to switch the drive back to FAT32 by using FDisk or something? I know I'm going to have to start from scratch ,, again.. So far all I can get to run is Unreal Tounament. That game runs on just about anything, haven't tryed it in MSDOS yet, heh heh.

I do have Win2000 Pro, however it always seems to have one problem or another. WinXP has been far more reliable and it's anti crash system is far more superior. It just isn't game friendly. All work and no play, makes for a dull evening.

Can't wait till someone takes over the OS market and actually tests their master program without blindly putting it out just for the extra cash. Every other year,, man... Take 98, SE, and ME for example.. heh heh ,, what a joke..

Thanks for the info.
