What's with the f Numbers on the lens?

Hi,

I'm with my girlfriend right now and we're wondering about something concerning the f Numbers on the digital camera lenses. Why is it that the minimum f, for instance, on my Canon A95 is stated as being 4.9 and I can get it up to f8.0? Why??
