What's with the CRAZY high taxes on international flights?

I've been to Europe twice before..

In 2002, my $1,000 flight to Holland had ~ $200 in taxes in the total, but the price was high since i was staying for 5-6 months.

Last summer, my $500 flight to England had ~ $150 in tax built into the price.

I'm currently looking for airfare to Switzerland and the taxes are outrageous.

The total cost of the flight is $740, nearly freaking $300 in tax built into the price (the airfare is $460) INSANE.

Is there something recently added to add to the tax?

Could you just fly to Detroit, drive to Canada, and then fly their airlines internationally?

Or something along those lines.

I don't think the actual TAX is what's killing you. Some Airports charge a pretty hefty fee to Land there, and that gets passed along to you, and a lot of Airlines also add their Fuel SurCharge to the taxes and fees sections. You will see prices broke down a lot differently. I recently flew from Chicago-Brussels-Madrid and back, and total taxes were less than 80 dollars. I've also priced out some flights to Dublin from Chicago, and taxes are similar.

Edit:

American Airlines from JFK to Zurich charges only 81.50 in taxes and fees. This is for roundtrip mid-week travel in November, not sure if other dates are any better priced. From Chicago fare was a little higher, and taxes and fees were 95 dollars.

Fare Summary ?
Average Fare Per Person - 369.00 USD
Passenger Type Used in Pricing Fare per Person Additional Taxes and Fees per Person Total Price
1 Adult 369.00 USD 81.50 USD 450.50 USD
Total Price 450.50 USD
