Because most people use their DVD burners to burn CD's more than DVD's so its an important feature even more so in most cases than the DVD burning aspect.

That is like me saying, " I don't know why they bother burning. All I care about is ripping".

I care about all aspects and features of a drive. CD/DVD burning, reading, ripping, etc.

You should add this too:
Isn't that a waste of time? so annoying, I didn't go to the computer store to buy CD-R but more expensive DVD+R. DVD+R will give the store more profit. I hate it when stores stack theirs DVD+Rs in the back and CD-Rs in front of them. Everytime I have to walk all the way to the back of the store to get the DVD+Rs I want.

all the reviewers do this same crap to puff up the reviews and make things much more complicated. I still have a cd burner that I could careless if someone ran it over with a 18 wheel truck.

Why don't they just skip cd-r testing? it's obsolete format that only few use today. Why would it matter if 40x is a little slower then 48x? It's like comparing apples to oranges from dvdrw to dvdrw and becomes a moot point

All of them reviewers who are paid compares cd-r, rw... I think all of the dvdwriters do very well on cd burning so that is why I don't think it is needed. I had a dvd writer 8x opotorite that stop recognizing dvd's so it can read/write only cds, so it went in the trashcan as it was out of warranty anyways as its over 1 years old.

obsolete?! Can you burn DVD music discs and play them in ANY audio player whether it is protable, car changer or what not? No. YOU may not use it but I can assure you that plenty still do, such as me. So please do not generalize since I am not in your shallow mind. The world does not revolve around what you want.

CDs are the primary mainstream medium for audio playback. They are not in danger of losing popularity, and are far from obsolete.

Audio CD error correction is very primitive, and often requires advanced reading technology to supplement it. Moreover, it's almost impossible to get a perfect audio CD rip, even from the best-quality drives. So having a top quality CD reader/writer is of paramount importance to those who value music. Don't be fooled into thinking all CD/DVD writers are good or even decent quality. Some of them are manufactured very poorly, and result in coasters up the whazoo, not to mention all sorts of badly flawed rips.

It is true that many people don't really care about CD read/write quality, as long as the job gets done. For those folks, the testing doesn't matter. However, countless communities of music traders, musicians and audiophiles do care.

I agree that they waste way too much space on the performance page with CD-R testing. The format of the reviews and the grouping of results could be much better.

That said, I appreciate how thorough they are. It's pretty ridiculous for you to rant that they should actually leave certain testing out of their reviews.

You don't seem to understand what "apples to oranges" means.

No WAY!!
I would have burned probably two DVDs after I burned ten plus CDs.

If you know of more than 3 cars that play DVD-Audio with a stock or upgraded sound system (not aftermarket), please let us know. The fact that you can burn an 80 min audio cd in 2min 30 seconds that costs $.20 and will work in any car is priceless. More likely a stereo will play MP3s today which is already plenty --> who is going to skip through more than 150 songs on a CD anyways (you'll die by the time you get to song 233 on a DVD). As far as things are concerned, there is no car or even reasonably priced home audio system on the market right now that will give you any advantage in dvd-audio over CD-R.
