What's with the car gift commercials during Christmas?

Now, I know that parents give their kids cars all the time. That's fine and dandy. But in the commercials, these beautiful people give their equally beautiful spouses very nice cars. They are always Benz's or Jaguars and they have a giant bow on top.

Considering most households are dual income, if you give your husband or wife a car, they are going to be paying at least half of it. What kind of gift is that? And if it's a single income household and the non-breadwinner gives the moneymaker a car, it's like gifting a $50,000 bill.

I would be pissed if I made some or all of the money and my wife "gave" me a Jaguar.

Well there are people who make in the high 6 figures who give their spouse a car for a present. what about people who make a million+ a year? a new car is nothing to them.

Oh no, everyone on earth sits around making 5 figures scrimping every penny until they're 80 and end up dying of a heart attack, its so much more worthwhile!

:p

My father bought my Mom a car a few years ago for Christmas.

EDIT: I have repeatedly told Lola that a Lotus Elise is perfectly a acceptable gift for me. :D

I am seriously considering getting a car for my wife. Hers is 7 years old and was just repaired after an accident. We've decided to get her a new one in the Spring but it would be totally cool to see the look on her face on Christmas morning if a new car was in the driveway.

The Mister and I were discussing this the other night.

I wouldn't mind if he bought me a car... as long as it was something he knew I would like, like a Volvo. :D

He would NEVER want me to buy him a car, though. He just bought himself a $1600 mountain bike (he really wanted a 4K one) and has been caressing it ever since. I could NEVER buy something as intimate as a car for him... he'd have to do that himself. :p

What does this mean? You wouldn't mind if he bought you a car as long as it was something you liked? Is that like saying I wouldn't mind if you bought me a present, as long as I liked it? Goes without saying, I thought.

Well there are different degrees of car. There's a Geo Metro, and then there's a BMW 540i for example. Both are cars. But I'd sure as heck rather have a 540i than a Metro. It's like little jimmy saying he wants a new XBOX 360 Premium for Christmas and getting a Nintendo Game Cube instead.

I for one buy cars for xmas every year. I give away about 2-3 as gifts. I wrap them so well that the people have no idea there is a car inside until they take it off!

Exactly. I already have an excellent vehicle... I don't think it would be a gift for him to get me something less excellent... that would be kind of insulting.

I gave my wife a new car last christmas. It was not a surprise though. We talked about what she would like, and shopped for the model and colour she wanted. She choose a Jeep Liberty.

I know of a couple *around* my age group...............

(note: I don't expect 20 something's to be buying eachother cars for Christmas)

.......but he's like 40 and she's like 32. He also happens to be 1/3 owner of a good size (not huge but not micro) trucking company that's been in business for 3 generations now so I'd assume he's got plenty of money to burn.

They routinely rotate buying a new car to replace one of their 3 every couple years anyway so the oldest a car ever gets in their home, is 6 years old.

It was a couple years ago & he bought her one of those tiny Mercedes that's like the cheapest thing they sell. It's a kinda' coupe thing & I think it has a hatch but not postiive. Kinda reminds me of Mercede's version of the Nissan Pulsar......(remember those? LOL).

Anyway, she was happy as all get out & he got to do the thing that he saw on TV so I guess maybe it's good to do once in your lifetime????

Again, why would anyone do this? Why would he buy you a car you didn't like?

I don't know honey. It's just a hypothetical situation. Why do you seem to take it so seriously? Have I touched on some deep issue within you? :D
