What's with new prebuilts having 3gb out of the box?

Seeing a lot of new systems at BB, CC, etc with 3gb.. Odd number. Do they really have 4gb and only 3 seen by Vista x32 or are they coming with 3 1gb sticks?

Its probably 2x1GB and 2x512.

Vista 32 flips out pretty bad if you install 4GB, its not just a "it doesnt see it all" issue.

Actually it doesn't. The only driver that has any trouble with Vista X64 is Nvidia.

ATI's Vidta drivers especially their x64 ones, are perfectly fine.

let.me.clarify.since.you.misunderstood:

If Vista 32 can only use less than 4 w/o problems, it MAKES SENSE to me that they have 3gb instead of 4. Put the most in you can w/o stirring things up.

Are there drivers available for vista 64 for every peripheral that mirror the vista 32bit version yet?

Probably 2x1GB + 2x512MB. Mostly due to the 32-bit limitations other have mentioned. It actually gets pretty ridiculous with high end video cards. 8800GTX SLI means you will only see 2.5GB max in 32-bit windows.

You can install 32bit drivers on vista x64 for the ones that dont have x64 drivers.

I have 4 peripherals that all work fine with 32bit drivers.

However, the nvidia drivers are pretty terrible as others have noted.

What is the feature loss by using 32bit on 64b systems?

All of my peripherals work just like they did in 32.

However, the nvidia control panel is basically empty, no temp or fan controls, no coolbits.

Basically AA and AF settings, and color correction.

They run 2x1 GB + 2x512 MB (for dual channel).

It's mainly since OEMs are scared of Vista x64.

There's really nothing much to be scared of, but keep in mind the average consumer barely will know how to use Vista, nevermind understand why they need 64-bit drivers, etc.

Simply put, the OEMs are stalling...kinda funny to me actually, since they're just delaying the inevitable.
