registry changes.

with win 2000 software and win 2k pro or win xp you usually don't have to restart.

With Linux, the only software upgrades that require restarts are kernel reconfiguration (if you compile new drivers in directly) or kernel upgrades. :)

Pretty much..

Configuration changes..

Sometimes you can run the program without restarting even if it tells you you need to restart.

Primarily registry changes and if anything involves services, it's most likely gonna require a restart.

Mostly just to replace files that are in-use since in Windows you can't delete open files, registry changes are dynamic.

Yep that is very annoying. I usually ignore those boxes and try to run the program anyway. No problems like that with linux. The worst might be having to restart X.. oh no.. it's so hard!
