What's with all these Cellular Providers all having 2 year agreements.

I'm looking to switch to a different provider and almost all the places online to sign up are
2 year contracts.

The only place I have seen that offer even 1 year (T-mobile) only is Letstalk.com

On that note, are there any online cell phone sites that offer 1 year service with good prices for phones.

Verizon has 1yr contracts, you just pay more for the phone and activation.

I imagine they're all that way. Just tell them you want a 1yr contract, you'll probably have to go into a store for it.

Cause they want to make sure they make money off of you after they give you that free phone.

That's the problem - people want expensive electronic devices for free or close to free. That's why they do 2 year contracts - to make it cost-effective to offer the phones at the prices people want.

Verizon is awesome in NJ, so there was no reason for me to not do the 2 year contract.

Last time I was at Cingular, we got a 1-year deal if we paid more for the phones. Luckily for me, the clerk botched the transaction and after some heated words, we ended up with the 1-year contract for the 2-year phone price.

But the point being is that they gave away awesome phones couple years back at great prices with 1 year contract..

I do know verizon has good service in NJ, i had them prior to switching out to T-mobile, than cingular.

They are all pretty good in the NJ/NYC area. The only issues I have with T-mobile and cingular is that their service sucks inside buildings

Why were there heated words and how did that help get the lower prices?

Did you get a new phone?

I'm about to resign with Cingular and I'm thinking of getting the 8525...

Most all of them offer 1 year...they just don't advertise them online.

I know Cingular will do 1 year if you call them...

I said when I came in we wanted a 1-year contract. So we checked out the phones, picked them out, and the guy transferred our contacts to the new phones. Then he started the extensive banging on the computer to finish out the transaction. Halfway through, he said oops, I accidentally charged you the 2-year price instead of the higher 1-year price for the phones. I knew it wasn't a mistake, he just wanted to get us into a 2-year deal. So I said forget the whole thing, give us our phones back, and we're going.

More banging on the computer, then he makes a phone call, then he says to me that he had no way of undoing the transaction to reactivate our old phones, and he called Cingular to get them to do it but they can't. It would take three days. (suuuure...)

I said if he didn't reactivate the phones, I was going to call the Cingular corporate office in the morning and tell them about my experience here and how he tried to swindle me into a 2-year deal when I made it perfectly clear what I wanted. And then how he deactivated my phones in order to pressure me into taking the 2-year deal.

At that point, he picked up the phone, made another call, and talked to someone for about five minutes then handed me the phone. It was Cingular, apologizing up and down for the inconvenience, and offering to credit my account for the difference in cost while making sure we had a 1-year contract.

Buy a phone on ebay, then sign up for a 1 year contract with the crappiest phone for free, and sell the crap phone and be happy!
