Just because something's being reported on more often doesn't mean it's happening more often. It just means it's being reported more often.
If a squirrel farts in Malaysia, I could read about it on Twitter within
seconds of it occurring. Loads of information is available to us, at a level that is utterly unprecedented for our species. Things we didn't know were common are coming to light.
My own theory: Raptor Jesus is spinning in his grave, located at the center of the planet. It's causing the core to spin wildly, which is generating disruptions in the magneto-spacetime curvature around Earth. This is focusing the radiation in the Van Allen Belts, which is causing movement in the iron in Earth's crust.
It all makes perfect sense.
