What's up with these birds?

I've been staying up pretty late lately and I've noticed that birds in my backyard start singing somewhere around 12 or 1 and don't stop (continues to 3 or 4 or even later, they are still doing it when I go to bed). I thought birds didn't chirp or anything at night? This is the first year I've heard it.
 
JohnCU, I live in NYC and I have to admit that I've noticed the same thing this year 😕
 
Based on the level of intelligence displayed in many posts on ATOT, I have to double check and have you make sure they're not owls.

Sorry if I offended you, but I'm trying to be cautious after seeing posts in which the poster can't tell a crow from a blackbird, and thinks his dog ate a crow (actually a blackbird) and thinks he should take it to the vet.

Mockingbirds will do this as well as nighthawks, whipporwills etc. Not uncommon during spring when males are setting up territory, and looking for females.

I'm making fun of people who can't tell a crow from a blackbird and people who take thier dog to the vet because it ate a small dead animal.

Yup. In CA the damn Mockingbirds sing ALL night. They never stop.
 
There use to be a really loud annoying bird near where I live, comes out at 3:30AM during summer and chirps, if it is on your house you can't sleep. Looked like a type woodpecker, red crest, white and black feathers on body. Didn't get a too good look at it, so I can't be sure.

Mockingbirds are also annoying. Sometimes they make sounds like cloth tearing...especially when they are fighting. Saw 2 of them beating on a red shouldered hawk one time making that horrible sound. 4 of them went at if for hours in front of my house screeching all the time.
 
Stupid birds.. if I don't wash the bird poop off my car, birds never poop on it. If I wash my car, there will be bird poop on it within hours.
