What's up with sports cars' engines these days?

I've been always a big BMW M3 fan and I figured I'd get one at some point in my life. Recently, however, I was checking out the specs for 09 M3 and it has a 415 HP engine (which comes with poor fuel economy and a gas guzler tax).

Now, I like fast cars as much as the next guy, but personally I think 400+ HP is just too much. Especially if most of your driving is done in places with 55 mph speed limit. If anything, I'm actually less inclined to get one now.

P.S. Looks like Audi S series had the same jump in power over the last few years.

It is just an arms race. Honestly, you may not get the track times you want, but driving an underpowered car near its limit is a lot more fun than barely tapping into the power of an overpowered monster.

Oh, and the Garage is that way ---->

I disagree, getting punched in the chest for all of first and second by 500-600 horses is much more entertaining than trying to keep up with traffic in a Toyota Prius 😛

uhhh, yeah what is up with cars these days? I mean, they used to be so beautiful, small, and fuel efficient.

For instance, the old Chevelle's, THAT was a fuel efficient car. Gotta love a 454!

And the old cadillacs! Thos things would get great mileage.

The only reason that ever stopped is because the gov f'ed everything up in the late 70's, every since then we have been trying to get back to 400 HP and the technology is letting us now.

cliffs: because we are men

In my mind something around 300-350 HP is perfect for a sports car. Anything extra and it's just a waste of fuel - you'll never get to use that power.

So get a 335 instead. It will handle most street chores and has 300 HP.

Sound like a rice rocket would suit you better. All dressed up and no go to go.

and cut the factory muffler off and put some after market kazoo muffler on that sounds like a dump truck. And does NOTHING for performance.

Have you ever heard those mufflers??? They sound nothing like a dump truck.

Looks to me like a lot of jealous people in this thread that want to afford an M3 and can't....and are pissed that someone who can, doesn't want one 😉

Not really, it's a bland looking car. If I had $60,000 to spend on a car, it would be something old, and fully restored to original condition.

I've always been fond of the Lotus Elise, I just like the whole concept behind it. Doesn't exactly have a powerhouse under the hood, but it's a super-light no frills sports car (don't even think they have AC or power steering and other luxuries like that). If I ever had the money to waste on a sports car that's probably what I'd get. 😛

Pretty much this... Whats a sports car with no power? And Sports car and Fuel economy? Those usually don't go hand and hand (except for a few exceptions). Get a 328i coupe if you want something "sporty" without the wonderful sounding V8.
