What's up with registration on newspaper sites?

All of a sudden my hometown newspaper - Philadelphia Inquirer's website wants me to register.
Damn, I hate having to log in just to read about something!!! WHY OH WHY!

Bad enough we register for the NYTimes.

actually they've been doing that since last year if i recall. oh nevermind ... that was some stupid poll they made u fill out before you proceed to the article
 
I don't mind it for the Post and the Times. But when these local small-medium papers start asking for it, I just get annoyed. Why? The Post and The Times I read at least every day. For my blog, I'm constantly linking to them. However, these smaller papers, I just want to read one article. Am I going to register for one article? Hells no. And it's not like they just say "e-mail addy and pass please" .. No this one paper made it mandatory from name/address all the way to occupation/income/etc etc etc .. A lot of BS stuff. I said F' them.
 
this is one of my pet peeves. i hate having to register just to read a article. i refuse to read a newspaper that makes me log in. i just go find the news elsewhere.
