And a more burning question: why do case manufacturers include an i/o shield with every case - an i/o shield that is incompatible with 100% of mb's - that is just thrown in the trash? Seems horribly inefficient and wasteful.
 
I think it is for more aesthetics than anything else. Now days all parts are shielded enough there shouldn't be a huge problem.

You may also have a situation in which you want a tight space there to make air move across the motherboard and vent in a certain way, or to prevent dust from coming in.

For me this is not the case as I am usually running phase or water and an open case door.
 
The I/O shield is not just so it looks nice. Gaps in the metal box are a major source for high frequency emissions. Also, such gaps ruin any idea of planned airflow in the case.

I probably tested with several sets of parts (motherboard, PSU, etc). Mine artifacted horribly on the POST screen on every board I put it into.

Because it doesn't happen to you doesn't mean it doesn't exist.

I've heard this but wasn't sure if it was still significant. Are these emissions concentrated around the cpu? What about running without slot covers? What about slot covers with 'slats' in them?

I've seen some i/o shields (abit?) with 'slats' in them supposedly for extra cooling. It seems to me that the whole area needs to be redesigned - but that's for another thread.

I guess so... How much actual wattage do each of these draw at idle and load?
