Whats up with my WU times?

System is as follows
XP1600 @ 1753mhz (10.5x167)
Volcano 7 HS/F
512 DDR (Samsung chips, cant remember the brand name of the stick)
Asus A7N266C
WD Expert 7200rpm 20 gig


why am i still pulling 20 hour seti units?

Firstly, are you using the CLI or the GUI (screensaver)?

If you are using the GUI, then i recommend you use the CLI. It is much much faster than the GUI, even with the GUI set to Blank Screen and Always run.

If this does not work, or you are already using the CLI then there is some bigger problem which we will have to tackle

when i get home i will run it from CLI and see how that runs. i didnt realize that the GUI was slower

Yeah, the GUI can be many times slower. Purely because a lot of the processing power is going to making those pretty graphics rather than doing the science.

On that rig i should imagine WU times with the CLI will be about 3.5-4hrs.

By the time you get home and get a WU finished i will already be asleep or back at work tomorrow (it's nearly 11pm here in the UK) but other people will be around to answer your questions

Also shut off any screen savers and in the power options set it to power down the hard drive "never".

That AthlonXP should crank out the WUs at a nice rate, now. Be happy you discovered the CLI early on. I crunched about 80+ WUs using the GUI before I joined the TeAm and heard about the CLI version.

I crunched a whole a heck of alot more than 80 before being introduced to the CLI.

I crunched several thousand WU's on GUI clients! ,but that was pre v3.x times when the GUI was almost as fast as the CLi (within a few%)

The GUI client isn't nearly *that* bad, I can virtually guarantee that the problem was that you didn't have screen blank turned on. But the CLI is still faster anyway, so you're probably better off.

Yeah true ,even with the GUI v3.07 ,as long as 'blank screen' is enabled or the window is minimised you should of got better WU times of around 5hrs ,the CLi is about 25% faster than an optimised GUI client ,not 2-3 times faster

In the old v2.xx days the CLi client was only about 5% faster ,10% in some cases
