is this thing doa? i just got it yesterday and installed it. bios sees it, devic manager es it but the light stays on and when i put a floppy in itjust makes a whirrig sound and asks for a disk. the stripe on the cable is to the right looking at the back and it seemed to go in ok.

no, can't write at all to it, it just asks for a disk to be inserted.

and it was a fresh install so i don't think it's a virus. i tried updating driver but no dice.

you know the same thing happened to me....now assuming that you have EXACLTY the same problem as me, then switch the floppy cable in the back upside down and plug it in. I know for sure that this was my problem. After i turned the floppy cable upside down, then plugged it in, it worked fine. I was in a rush and plugged it in the wrong way. SO MAYBE you should try that =) or maybe the connection to the mobo is the wrong way as well, so just make sure.

That is almost always the solution to this problem. Now the question is why were they designed to accept upside down cables?

hmm, i'lltry it. i thought the red stripe always went on the right? the mobo is keyed so i think that is ok, but looking at the back of the drive is impossible. i just figured red stripe right.

And why are so many of them keyed backwards? It's a good thing they usually get the power connector keyed properly.

well, i'll be damned. thank you! i turned the cable over and it works fine. thanks again.

Hi, The Ribbon cable is on backwards. Check both ends and make sure pin one, the colored strip, is on pin one on both ends. Most floppies have pin one nearest the power connector, but there are exceptions. The drive is not damaged by putting the cable on backwards, but if there was a floppy in the drive it is blown. Luck, Jim
