Whats up with mac's and ejecting cd/dvd problems?

this happens from time to time on all the mac's i've owned, and even my parents.

sometimes the computer just won't eject the disk, at all. Othertimes the cpu revs really high and the system slows to a crawl for 30-40 seconds, then it pops out. Other times, like now, i have to reboot while holding down eject...

What's up with mac's and ejecting dics? Seems to be a pretty simple task, no?

I would think the problem comes with the use of the slot-loading drives instead of the tray's? There is no easy way to get it out of the slots so it seems that it takes a long time, but in reality it has to actually stop the drive and everything which would maybe explain the CPU revs? Just my thoughts.

i've only had it happen a few times. And it's been when whatever program I'm using to access the drive crashes.. and it seems not to want to let go of the drive.

and what do you mean by CPU revs... 100% processor usage.. are are you talking about the drive actually spinning up. I've never heard of the cpu being referred to as revving

i have Activity Monitor running all the time, with the icon in the dock set to show CPU usage...

When i try to eject a disc, many times one CPU goes FULL red for a good 20-30 seconds, then it either ejects the disc, remounts it, or does nothing. It seems to be the 'Windowserver' process, but im not 100% sure.

I have never run into this problem. Closest I came was after the 10.4.10 update. I can no longer just quickly tap the eject button to eject, i now have to hold it for a second or two. But I have never had it hold onto a disk.

This is on a Macbook isn't it? I know a guy on another forum that has had his drive replaced 3 times.

Yea I have a MacBook, and this is really the only hardware problem that I have run into. that and my backlight flickers when i am at home. Seems to only happen at home, so I guess I need to hook up my power conditioner again.

First gen powerbook g4's were notorious for eating cds. You had to insert a small screwdriver and release a latch inside the drive for the disc to spit out. Apple eventually fixed the problem with a firmware update though. Are you encountering this problem on the macbook or macbook pro? Because if its a powerbook you should download the firmware for the drive.
