Whats up with Japan, China, Korea..

I don't think they have better technology, they're just more rapid adopters of current technological developments. Japan at least. They have a national obsession with new tech and companies over there feed it. Here in the U.S. we aren't as obsessed so companies get to string us along with older tech. Why should U.S. companies upgrade their technologies when U.S. citizens are willing to pay top dollar non-cutting edge gadgets/services.

The lame thing is, DOCSIS 2.0 allows for up to like 40 Mbps, but of course, here in the US, we have greedy ass cable companies
<-- Is charged fvckin 49.99 a month by Bright House Networks for 6mbps/384kbps Road Runner.

Most of China is agrarian/poverty stricken, so they're still decades away from us.

As for Japan, I'd say they don't have better technology, just more people willing to use it. As someone else put it, they're a nation of electronics whores 😉

Because there's like no funding in sciences and engineering? Plus, poor implementation of what we know? I wouldn't say it's just the U.S., but the world as a whole that's technologically lagging.

The top charge to keep on my list for
President Bush should be to inspire the
next generation of U.S. scientists and
engineers. Currently, despite all we have
done in the past decade, we are not
spurring young Americans to go into the
physical sciences and engineering. This
problem is getting worse as the years go
by. Today, the number of U.S. citizens
getting degrees in physical science and
engineering alone is low?it is at best static,
and dropping off. My latest data is for
the year 2002 (see Figure 1); the 2003 and
2004 numbers will be a bit lower. The
number of Americans getting degrees in
all fields of sciences and engineering,
excluding psychology and social sciences
(the increase coming mostly from the life
sciences), is about a factor of two higher
but is still static and tapering off
..........................................................................

Another bleak indicator is the waning
influence of the United States on the scientific
education of students from other
countries. For a number of decades, the
United States, particularly after World War
II, was the premier place for the advancement
of physical science and engineering.
Now, that is no longer true. In fact, in
today?s world, Europe and Asia, having
recovered from their wars, have dramatically
enhanced their education experience
and are strongly pushing the physical sciences
and engineering, along with the life
sciences. This trend has been remarkable.
Back in the early 1980s, some of the first
Asian students I had in my group?very
bright students from China?were among
the first who came over during the Carter
administration. In the decades that followed,
many young Asians who received
their degrees here stayed here in the
United States. Now, however, a great
majority of bright, young, highly motivated
Asian scientists are returning to their
own countries. More and more, new students
are not coming over here at all for
their education because it is not necessarily
true anymore that to be on the frontier
of science and engineering, to be in the
cutting-edge research groups, one has to
come to the United States. Asian citizens
now dominate new PhD production in
the sciences and engineering worldwide.
They are bright, creative, and extremely
hard-working. As current trends continue,
they are the future

The US is definately not the Tech Powerhouse it used to be. I am not gonna claim that we are behind, but i will claim that if weare ahead, we are not ahead by a huge margin anymore.

Well, having travelled extensively in SE asia, I can say we ARE behind. Aside from broadband, their wireless networks are larger, and almost flawless. And devices? It makes our current ones look like cans and string.

It is just not good to be under that influence/

What type of things are they making there, that makes them so advanced??

um... i think its because in the US, we decided we wanted to spend all our money buying missles and guns, while japan and korea for the most part well they are spending it on science and education and engineering.

that and it is not "cool" to be into science or engineering in this country. mostly because well its a difficult field compared to others, and people dont like smart people.

and i guess ill add, that the reason japan and korea dont have to spend money on guns and missles is because well they havent managed to piss everyone else off in the world like we have since we have decided that as big bad america we might as well meddle in everyone else's business. oh wait that and korea and japan know america the gun and missle owners of the world, pretty much pay for their defense anyway with our bases in their countries.

so yes... i think if we spent 1/2 our defense budget on well.... thinktanks, labs, and perhaps propoganda to make people actually want to be scientists/engineers etc we could well be... like korea or japan.

Wow you're like some kind of genius. I nominate you for Secretary of State and Defense.

The reason why those countries (along with most of the civilized world) don't spend much on the military is that they have no need to because the US provides security around the globe.

But to answer the OP directly, it's much harder to deploy technologies that are capital intensive because of the way the US infrastructure is built. Population density is much higher in Japan and SK so it's relatively cheaper to deploy technologies there. Also, it's a matter of choice; Americans like to spend money on Ford F-150s and JP and SK consumers spend it on new cell phones (it helps that they don't have to spend money on a car).

Also, aside from that engineering school in India, I don't see any Harvards, MITs, Stanfords, CalTechs, etc in Asia. If they spend so much in engineering, why do we have all the top notch colleges and there are so many FOBs who study at our schools?

Japan does seem to adopt more consumer electronics faster than we do (China lol), but as others have said it is a nation with a MUCH smaller landmass so a greater population density so things can be implemented faster/cheaper. And consumer electronics != technology in general. As cool as they are, PS2's are not the same thing as putting a man on the moon.

China isn't really ahead in technology.
Japan and Korea are such smaller land masses that setting up a new infastructure costs significantly less than it would in America.

Yeah you forgot the part about Japan not being allowed to have an army, only a police force not to exceed 100,000. Since we impose this sanction on them, we are responsible for their defense.

OP, Japan and South Korea are big into consumer electronics, Plasma TV's, cell phone technology etc. Additionally, both of those countries are much smaller land-wise than the US, so high speed fiber lines are pretty cheap to deploy (comparatively)

LOL where the hell do you get your ideas? The United States has the most scientists and engineers in the world (Source in my college economics textbook published 2005). If anything, I'd say science majors are one of the most popular in this nation.

Actually that isnt quite correct. Although their land mass is smaller, their population is more dense, and vertical. It costs significant amounts of money to work on the infrastructure there because of this. Imagine deploying fiber in Manhattan. You get the idea.

I'm ashamed to say he goes to my alma mater. UCLA's been going down the tubes for a while.

have you been in a school lately. there was even a recent issue of newsweek focusing on this topic by itself. we have a ton of math/science grads, but a lot of them are foreign nationals. this was ok until many fo them decided it was better to just be trained here and go back home.

american born americans are souring on the idea of majoring in engineering or science. i have a friend who actually works for ucla where according to him the quantity of engineers graduating has shrunk every year since we had enrolled , which was 1999.

it doesnt matter if you have "the most engineers" in the world. it matters that our lead is shrinkging.

and the reason... that korea and japan adopt electronics and generally "luxury goods" (they become non-luxury, when they become cheaper) is that people in korea and j apan have a much higher percentage of their income that they can spend on goods because people there tend to live at home because real estate is expensive.

that is especially true in japan. so people live with their parents, and buy the latest electronics with their income. that and their homes are smaller so they buy smaller things (which are more advanced because of miniaturization).

on the telecommunications side, its mainly because their governments have supported the idea of laying fiber everywhere. even some south american countries lik eperu and argentina are more aggressive rolling out high speed commincations than we are, because they can see it is what is going to matter for their country in the future.

and thank you js80 for the insult. i have no idea who you are, but i'll just assume you are well basically classless. if you cant come up with an argument that makes sense, then dont stoop to pathetic name calling. since if anyone is making ucla look bad it is you bucko.

Actually, a lot of students in Korea/Japan/Taiwan who weren't "good" enough to be admitted to Todai/Seoul U/Yonsei go to Stanford/Berk/etc as backups because the competition to get into those schools is so incredibly intense that they actually find it easier to get into the best US schools. A lot of the FOBs studying at our schools aren't here because it was their first choice.
I'm not saying that those schools are actually better than MIT/Caltech/etc because numbers show that the contributions and output of the American top universities are higher than the Asian ones. However, the quality of the applicant pool may very well be superior to the US. Asian students tend to grossly outperform American students up to the college level, where the American universities begin to pull back. This is a cultural thing - in Asia, your diploma from a top university is gold - employers will pick you up even if you have no experience or knowledge of wtf the company is about - the top companies take grads from the top schools and train them. Because of this, students in the top Asian universities often begin to slack - not slack so much that they don't pass classes, but perform at a much more lax level than they have up to that point in their lives. In the US, your degree is worth much less, even if you graduate from a top university. Here your career success has much more to do with your experience, networking, etc. There are plenty of fairly poor Harvard/Yale/Stanford/etc grads out there - more than you think because you don't read about them as much. The percentage of people that aren't successful after graduating from a top US university is probably much higher than their Asian counterparts.
