I was about to say the same thing about ATOTers bashing the nonconformists. I would tend to agree with the fact that certain things aren't just a name... they are actually made with better quality. The other half of the price IS the name... as in "status" for carrying a good product (or at least known/thought to be better). What, exactly, is wrong with that ? Self-righteous fools... do you honestly think EVERYONE who can carry an expensive item on their person has low self-esteem or an inferiority complex? Do you think that stock broker with a Rolex really bought it because he needed a boost of esteem ?

Take this concept into the car realm and then maybe a lot of people here will then see the light...

Sure a $15000 car can last me just as long as a $60000 car, but do you really think it's got the same craftsmanship ? Or do you think it's still all in a name ?

To all the bashers of anything: I understand there's this big drive to want to feel and/or act different from the norm, but don't make it so obvious that's the only reason you're doing it.

If someone is happy in Wranglers from KMart, that's fine. If they'd rather spend $150 on Diesel jeans, that's fine.

Why the fvck do you care if someone else wants to spend THEIR money on expensive clothes?

Don't tell me that everybody in here hasn't done stuff like this. (i.e. Intel over AMD when AMD gets the job done at a cheaper price, Sony monitor instead of XYZ company, etc.

Exactly! The overpriced BS name brands are bought by vapid mouth breathers that want to impress other vapid mouth breathers with how much money they spent. It only matters to them. Hey, it's their money and their right to spend it how they wish. But it's also MY right to make fun of them for doing so.

Hm, so while you go into your desk job with your "livable" house and "driveable" car, I'll be sure to cruise on by with my Porsche to take you over to my 20-room mansion. Captalism rules humanity; wanting better drives the economy.

I like my "liveable" house and my "driveable" car. They suit me fine and I am comfortable with them. I caould piss my money away on status sysmbols, but I have nothing to prove to anyone by doing so. I don't feel the need to compensate for some type of shortcoming by being extravagant and flashy. Pompousness is not in my character. It may suit some people, but not me. Enjoy your "Porch", and try not to get lost in your 20 room mansion.
Are you trying to work the my-car-will-get-me-from-pointA-to-pointB deal ? Because I hear a Geo Metro will get you there just as well as a Lamborghini Diablo. If you could afford 5 Diablos and your great grandchildren's Diablos, you'd still get a Metro because it gets you there too?

Are you saying you think a $150k house in NY (which would be the size of a shed) is just as liveable as a $600k house that you could well afford ? Your argument sounds like something only people who can't afford things like that would say. I'm exactly someone who can't afford most of the things either, but I'm not obviously jealous of people who have them. You may think you don't need any of that now, when you don't have the money for it... but if you "win for life"... you're not going to be buying a Metro...

Give me a break.

Now you've got every right to buy that Diablo, but not because you want to show off your wealth, but because you want to drive a really fuggin phat car. Are you hoping others will see this reasoning too ? Hope they won't think any less of you? What would you say to those mofos who look at you like you're a poser ? My point is... you're saying you have nothing to prove to anyone... but did you ever stop to think you can actually do it for yourself to enjoy?... much like there are people who buy these things for themself ? They're not all out to impress you, SLICK, believe me.

See, you all think that there is something inherently satisfying about buying such items that make it worth more than your local GAP. But do YOU idiots not SEE the state of people who are buying them? They are slaves to it! Walk around mid-town manhattan one day, and you'll see the countless women with the 600+ Louis Vuitton bags. You'll also see their monkey like face with botox paralysis around their mouths, collagen injection in their lips, and their face pulle tight on either side. And I'm not even exaggerating! It's part of a greater sickness, namely to be be perpetually unsatisfied with everything one has access to. Capitalism EATS itself, and the most successful are also the ones who are most problem ridden. After all, they've achieved wealth - something that everyone else holds as an ideal - and are STILL not happy. But rather than reeavaluate the way in which they are seeking it, they just push on harder. So sad.

OK, let's say you make $300,000 a year.
You carry your money in a binder clip instead of a Coach wallet because it does the same thing.
Your drive a Ford Festiva because it's "driveable"/
You have a "liveable" 1-bedroom apartment.

What's the point? What the HELL do you do with the money then?

Some of you people are just retarded and I think you're just bitter you have no money.

lol, I agree with amnesiac, some of you poor fools feel it's your job to hate on those who have it...yeesh, I've never seen people so bitter just about clothes and accessories.

Some clothes have better materials, better quality, craftsmanship and design...just like how some cars are better than others, same with computers, electronics...and don't tell me they're all the same.

Now, mind you, I don't possess everything Gucci/LV/Coach, but it's not a sin to splurge every now and then. good god, get a life and find something constructive to do, other than sit around and bitch about people spending money...

Well, sometimes there is something more satisfying about items that are "normally" more expensive. Follow Rossman's Ferengist movement and you'll be able to buy the higher quality products that some name brands produce and not have to pay the exorbitant retail.

Yeah, do you realize that a huge number of people walking around in any major metro city have "bling" of some sort on them? Heck, the majority of the time it's FAKE. In NYC especially... they're knockoffs or they go to the sample sales, TJMaxx, or whatnot and get them for the price you'd pay for plain ol' stuffs.

Then again there are people just like you describe. Consumerism is rampant everywhere. How do think Lexus and Acura are now regarded as luxo-marks that are special beyond their main companies when in actuality there isn't really a difference other than trim levels.

I think what my father commented about rich people is true... once you are really RICH, you don't really care about how much it costs if you want it. You just buy it regardless if you're paying more than you should. My aunt is like that... she WAY overpaid for her Acura Legend new while I scraped the bottom of the barrel and bought a nice used 2G DSM for $4k. People say, "Oh, I'd never spend that much on such and such!" but once they get wealthy enough to not be frightened of the sticker... "OH WOW! THAT'S SO NEAT! Gimmegimme!" Sometimes it doesn't matter where you're from.

So you think capitalism is evil? So... tell us what would be a good thing to replace it with??

I can understand some people being confused at those people who live in a shoddy house in the ghetto yet drive an expedition and wear Versace. That's just stupid.

But if you have a million dollar house in the suburbs, are sending your kids to a private school, and you make more than enough money to live comfortably, why NOT buy a decent car, wear clothes from somewhere other than Old Navy, and eat somewhere other than Jack in the Box for lunch every day?

BTW, some brands ARE worth the extra premium. Take stereo equipment for example. You pay more, you get more. Coach wallets are crafted from VASTLY superior leather than the crap you find at a mall kiosk. Rockport/Timberland shoes are much better than what you'd get at Payless.

If you poor people want to make fun of those with more money than you just because you can't afford the same stuff, fine. But remember who's keeping the economy flowing. Capitalism doesn't work if no one spends.

whoo hoo, I have people that agree with me for once.

But you never know, he might just be a modern hippie posting on ATOT since he's stoned off his rocker, complaining against the system and capitalism...it's possible...

<--enjoys the finer things in life and doesn't mind spending a little more on clothes/toys if he has the money. Seriously, I earned my money, I'm gonna spend it, dammit. (no CC debt, either)

Hmm... let's count the generalizations in this one. Err, actually let's not.

So anyone who seemingly looks like they have money (because they carry around expensive stuff) are IDIOTS.

You sound like you are a happier person simply for the fact that you think you're smart enough to stay away from expensive stuff that may make you look like a poser... when in fact you aren't either way. This is enough to satisfy you ? LOL. Why would you restrict yourself like that ? Just because you're DIFFERENT makes you feel good... yeah, nice way to live. Sounds like a 16-year old's philosophy... seriously. It's the same reason they defy their parents... because they don't want to conform... and solely for that reason... when in fact there's nothing wrong with doing the norm.

If people are smart enough to speak out about it, what makes you think they don't realize they are doing such things you deem "slave"-like ? Maybe because they can actually think for themselves and for what they do and don't want. You are in no way superior to them, and likewise the other way around, except they can buy things you cannot, however little that matters.

What's the most expensive OR big-name thing you own ? Don't lie. I bet you there was a flash in the pan... and if you had 50-times that amount available to spend, you wouldn't be so quick to judge.

Ditto.

If you have it why not spent it? Enjoy life a little. If things make you happy why not buy it? Us some get pc parts that are OTT and a case with lights and what not in. Others get pricey bags etc.

But I'll be dam if I spend any of my money on a bag that costs £350+ for no other feature then it looks *nice* until I am seriously not that bothered about money. Which isn't going to be any time soon! But if I had it then it wouldn't be such a problem in getting it.

sheesh, If I could afford expensive stuff, Id be buying it. I splurge every now and then (BR, Marshal Fields, etc) but even then I feel bad for spending money on expensive clothes.

BTW, my leather wallet (which my dad probably bought for like $5) has lasted me 7+ years so far. Ive got so much junk in there that its starting to show wear at the botton "hinge" now, so it might be time to replace it. Dang, gotta waste another $5...:D

lol yeah my wallet is like that.

I was looking at some designer wallets a few weeks ago. None of the designs was any good to me so I didn't buy one. If I saw a nice wallet I'd pay up to £70 for one.

My DKNY italian leather wallet looks BRAND NEW after 1 year of every day use. I don't mind that I spent $40 on it or whatever it cost. A lot nicer than anything Wal-mart has to offer, for sure.

Do I really need 2.75ghz to read e-mail and play CS? nope, a 1ghz should do fine - both do the same job, just like your paper bag and gucci.

rolleye.gif
rolleye.gif
your 2.75 ghz machine will play CS with much better FPS at higher resolutions, especially if you want to take it further and compare broadband to dialup internet. greater FPS = greater performance, regardless of whether your puny little brain can perceive the difference.

but it all boils down to bragging rights. doesn't it? if you disagree, you're full of it. my computer is faster than yours = my shirt/shoes/bag/wallet/car/house costs more than yours.

it's the same damn thing.
