I know its all inflation, but I really think that they are thinking americans are just stupid by downsizing the cases of beer to have 10oz cans instead of the 12oz. They also keep advertising the "20" bottle cases. All this while they jacked the price of the normal 24 case of beer up to dumb amounts.

I also noticed this with soda. Who in the hell really buys the 13.2oz bottle for 99 cents? I also noticed at the CVS pharmacy that they sell 20oz softdrinks for freakin $1.40.

heh, where I work, the vending machine is CHEAPER than store prices...

ever notice that most 'half gallon' cartons of ice cream are only 1.75 quarts? of course they don't say 1/2 gallon...that would be illegal, but many dairy products align their prices with cheaper brands and reduce the volume.

With those prices I dont. At wallgreens they sell it at the normal $1.00 a 20oz though. I usually just buy the 2 liters or a 12 case when I buy soda though.

I'm in the supermarket business. Trust me, people truly are fools. You can have a display of Coke at .79 cents for a 2 liter bottle and have the 13 ouncers for .99 and people really will buy the 13 ouncers. The manufacturers do it because they can. If you can get people to pay $1.29 for a 12 ounce bottle of tap water like Aquafina, you can sell them anything.

When certain ice cream companies began downsizing their ice cream from 1/2 gallon to 56 ounces or so it was a real problem. Sales flyers are sent to the printer well in advance and size changes will often occur in that period. If you advertise "Edy's Ice Cream - Half Gallon for $2.99" and the only thing you have on your shelves is a 56 ounce container for "$2.99" you're going to have people lining up to complain all week long.

Before my dad sold his gas station / convenience store, I used to work at the store and almost nobody ever bought 2 liters even though it was cheaper than a 500 ml (1/2 of a liter) bottle. I don't know. People are crazy.

Could be because they only wanted the smaller amount of soda and didn't want to waste the amount the other one would have left over.

Plus the liter bottels are a pain to drink from. :D

I always buy soda at 4/$10 for 12 pack cans. I don't like bottles and won't pay any more than that for soda. Just have to watch the ads to see who has it on sale any given week and stock up.

I find 20 beers to be a reasonable amount to get me drunk. 24 is a bit much.

What about Girl Scout cookies, those things are a joke now.

I'm still looking for a case of 40oz beers :)

Same here. 2 Liters were usually on sale for $.99 (cold, not warm), 20 oz was $1.09, 1 liter was $1.39, and nobody would buy the 2-liters.

Everything is being downsized. A bag of sugar is now 4 lbs instead of 5, did the price go down? Hell no, it's higher than it's ever been. A 10 lb. bag of ice that used to be .99 cents 5 years ago is now 7 lb's & $1.49. This is just a tiny example. It is happening with everything. Didn't you ever notice that your favorite candy bar seems a bit smaller?

The reason........?

People are stupid and will put up with any and all amounts of greed as long as their pathetic little worlds aren't interrupted. And the food industry knows this.

You're exactly right, that's exactly why it happens. Inflation only affects food.

Yeah, I pretty much agree with you. Just like with bottled water, people are dumb enough to buy it so you really cant blame the water bottling companies. I am more pissed about the crappy 10oz cans of beer than anything, a 10oz can of miller lite wont do squat to anyone.

Maybe because a 2 liter wouldn't fit in the cupholder in the car?

I'm at a loss for how to respond to this without insulting your intelligence. I'll try though. You didn't explicitly mention inflation, but you described it. With your list of food prices that have gone up, you failed to mention that prices for everything else have gone up, as well as the amount of money people make.

"Greed?" This isn't communist Russia, comrade. What you call greed we call capitalism.

But those little tiny bottles of Coke are so cute!!!

That's the reason one of my friends buys them. She's kind of daft.

it's simple economics.. if ppl buy, it will be made. stuff like sugar tends to be inelastic. anyway... I hate the 2L bottles.. I don't drink all that much soda, so if i open a 2L bottle, 3 days later, it's flat as hell. I only buy them for parties.

I noticed this recently with even thing slike Graham Crackers. I have something I make that needs 10 graham crackers. When I made it as a kid, there were always 11 crackers per package. THen there was 10. Now there's only9 so I hav to open two packages. But somehow I don't think the price has gone down...

Hmm, you brought up the same word twice, in as many posts. Implying that I am somehow talking about it? I am not (The word is inflation, for the slower folks out there).

Let me make this clear so that there is no doubt: Reducing the size of your product from it's previous amount, and then raising the price of it to more than the price of the originally sized product, is plain and simple greed. They are (The Food industry, in this instance) relying upon the stupidity & inherrent inability of the populace to see that they're being ripped off.

I'm not picking a fight, but my point is pretty damn clear.

Most shoppers are not nearly so observant (or really care) as those of us participating in this thread. If they were, they would try to determine if the large, economy size is really more economical than the regular size - it often isn't. A case in point - at Walmarts in Hattiesburg, MS a 20-pack case of 12 oz cokes is $5.88 yet the 12-pack is $2.98, almost 20% cheaper per can! The 4-packs of toilet paper are often more economical than the 12-packs. Its a game of perceptions not fact. Shoppers make snap judgements rather than thinking......
