Jason Mraz
John Mayer
etc...

They imitate his god awful sound, stage moves, his spasms, "unique" band name ..

Who's idea was it to take a crap on the Xerox machine and press copy?

mraz isn't even close to dmb... you'd have to be pretty uneducated or not very familar with their music to make a comment like that... mraz's studio stuff isn't so great, but check out his live stuff - that's where it's at

"god awful"? How could you possibly say that?

Why don't you list some of the bands you like so we can laugh at you!

On the surface you may see similarities, and part of that is because DMB has been around long enough to actually have an effect on up-and-coming artists. For the record, both Jason Mraz and John Mayer have cited Dave as an early influence, so of course that is going to come out in their songwriting and performance.

But delving deeper, you would notice that both Mraz and Mayer bring other influences to their respective styles. Mayer, on one hand, is a guitarist first and foremost. He idolizes guys like Vaughan and Sting. Mraz puts his energies into the vocal side of things, as well as incorporating more folk and hip-hop nuances.

Another reason for the similarity that cannot be ignored-- John Alagia was the producer on both Mayer's and Mraz's debuts, and he's also produced for DMB. Production plays a huge role in the way the songs ultimately sound. Take a listen to Mayer's "Inside Wants Out" (his indie release) and you'll hear some of the same songs as on his Sony debut, but in a much more stripped down form, replete with jazz and blues licks you won't find within the glitz and gloss of the latter. That is why I was disappointed when I first heard "Room for Squares". To this day I would much rather listen to "Inside Wants Out".

Mraz's early albums vs. "Waiting for my Rocket to Come" is the same story... the vast majority of his established fanbase prefers his early records or his live stuff to the overly-produced "debut" album.

So to call these guys DMB clones is like calling all of todays' BritPop artists Beatles clones. Certainly the influences are there, but to completely ignore the other elements that make up these artists' respective styles shows you really haven't paid much attention.

John Mayer sings like Dave Matthews, but the similarities end there. I like John Mayer. I still can't stand DMB.

So glad I'm not the only one who feels this way about DMB and Mayer. I was just talking about this very subject this week. I can't stand their acoustic guitar playing, raspy soulful voice, frat rock. I can't believe someone can say that the similarities end with their voice. What makes it so bad are the numbers of blind followers they have. People who (no fault of their own) haven't been taught to think for themselves, and all they know is to like what seems popular. So radio and MTV teaches them that these bands are good. So sad, so sad.

Here's an idea for you...

You have your own opinions about music.
Others have their own.

You word is not the end-all be-all...and neither is theirs.

DMB and John Mayer are each talented in their own way...especially instrumentally. The sheer talent that the band members of DMB have is amazing. If you don't like their music, fine...but don't crap on their musical talent.

After going to one of John Mayer's concerts, my thoughts on him as a musician were sealed. He is only BETTER in concert where other bands sound like crap.

Since you think that DMB and Mayer are so bad, why don't you tell me what current artist(s) you think are GOOD??

AND WHY DOES EVERYONE SAY THAT JOHN MAYER SOUNDS LIKE DAVE MATTHEWS...I JUST DON'T HEAR IT!!!

I've been listening to Dave for almost 10 years (well, since '94) and I've never really put a DIRECT connection between Mayer and Dave vocally. Sure, there are some similarities (as there would be for just about ANY artist), but a CLONE?? Not even close.

And John's subject matter is way "lighter" than Dave. John sings a lot about relationships and normal everyday stuff. Now Dave on other hand has some f*&ked up songs...good, but deeply demented:) I remember the first time I listened to Halloween, I was like WTF...yet it put chills down my spine. He has some great songs about some wicked stuff. Like Big Eyed Fish...if you just listen to the song, you may think that Dave was sitting back in a rocking chair smokin' up when he wrote the song. But if you actually listen to the lyrics of the song, it's PURE GENIOUS!!

That is why I was disappointed when I first heard "Room for Squares". To this day I would much rather listen to "Inside Wants Out".

IWO is an awesome album. RFS is good too, but I find myself listening to just My Stupid Mouth, 3x5, The Great Indoors, Not Myself, and St. Patrick's Day...the other songs are just a bit too "fancy" for me.

Now the Live CD....now THAT's where it's at!! :p

If NE1 can listen to these songs from Any Given Thursday and tell me that John is a fake or copy, then you need some help:

Something's Missing
Lenny/Man on the Side
Message in a Bottle
Covered in Rain

Very well put NFS4. I've been following DMB the past 10 years or so myself. Comparing Mayer or Mraz to them....well, there is no comparison.

I saw Mraz open for DMB in Chicago this past December, and while interesting, his style is completely different.

Mayer is pop-candy.

Like you, one of the biggest reasons I am into DMB as much as I am, there is no one like them. I trade shows regularly with people all over the country. It's gone so much further beyond the "frat boy music" or "hippie, free-love music" that some people here think it is. That's probably partially due to the fact that those people choose to be followers, listening to all of the popular garbage that is on the radio. The talent pool there has less than wowed me the last couple of years, as a lot of the popular music sounds the same, with different beats.

Show me a band today that has as much talent on one stage that will be around in 10 years ........

Mraz has an awesome voice when he really wants to. He just sings too high IMHO...but has the talent to.

Dave just puts himself into the jam and into the passionate singing he does. (when he breaks out) He's also a good love-song writer. (Lover Lay Down and Rapunzel are good examples)
