What's up with all the trolls hitting FS/T these days?

I notice that a ton of people are trying to scam people. I just caught one today. Man, this is getting out of hand. Don't they know that they can't scam US?

It sucks because it makes selling things harder. People are not as likely to buy because they are worried about getting scammed.

luckily I haven't run into it yet. I'm slowly working my way up in heat and will be decently reputable soon ^_^

what i've found in fs/ft is the majority of people are incredible traders... its just the few bad ones that gives online trading a bad name.

🙁 i don't have any heat and only opened a verified pay pal account just a couple weeks ago. I'm willing to pay first, but i don't get responses from the people i PM.

*shrug*

At 17-0, I wouldn't insist that you ship first so consider yourself decent and reputable...well decent at least 😉

Two reasons:

1) People don't follow trading guidelines, ship/pay first to a newbie, and make it easy to get scammed. If you never ship/pay first to people with less HEAT references, your chances for getting scammed are much much lower. Cross-trading should only be a second option, whoever has less references should always have to ship/pay first.

2) There isn't much you can do to a scammer. Very few of them get caught or prosecuted. For every one that does, 1000 escape free. As law enforcement people will tell you, the criminal bases his acts on the probability of getting caught.

What does this mean? If I have 50 and you have 17 you should have to ship first?

The biggest problem is Pa Pal everyone wants their money right now and some are willing to pay first through them.

I will not deal with anyone that has P Pal only, because they are really controlled by trolls because of their charge back policy.

I would guess that the vast majority of trolls operate with P Pal accounts.

I agree that Heat is important but the vast majority of my trades are with people with less Heat. If someone has 10 or more positive Heat evals and all their contact info matches up, I usually send the cash. The second biggest consideration to Heat is the cost of the item. A $10 item isn't nearly as much of a concern as that nice 18" Planar 😉

repeat after me: HEAT - WARE

This is somewhat of a help but heatware can be faked also, it has been done in the past and I am sure it will be done in the future.

No... *he* has 17 not me 😉

I wouldn't expect him to ship first even though I have alot more Heat than he does. 17 is good enough for 90% of the items I would be buying.

This is true, but it's hard to fake 30 heatware references. Just take a look at who the person is trading with and see if they are legit accounts. If you haven't heard of them on the boards, you know something is up. Heat is a great reference system once you get passed 30 refs or so.

Not me. I have very strict trading guidelines after getting scammed the first time (for a very small item also). People may not like it, but my track history speaks for itself. I can easily pass a deal with someone who isn't cooperative. I would rather pay full retail for an item and get a new warranty, then get scammed here trying to save a few bucks.

I've dealt with 3-4 new traders this past month alone and they've been great so far.

Had one ship his DVD-R first, he had no problems with it.

Sold things to other new traders and they communicated and paid quickly.

Speaking of, I owe tons of heat.

/me rushes of to heatware

I've yet to be trolled in my 3 years of trading here. Luckily the first gentleman I traded (amonline) was kind enough to explain how everything works out. Basically you just use common sense, if it sounds to good to be true, it is. Now I'm the reputable trader and it's easier, but my advice to new people would be to only trade with those long established members off the bat unless you're willing to chance it.

I'm hoping most people think along your lines. I'd say <10 is still questionable. However, if you can completet >15 deals without a complaint your in pretty good shape 🙂

I actually should have 20 evals but some people just can't take the 1 min it takes to leave someone heat so... I'm at 17 😛

I have had the same problem and the worst part I lost a bunch when heatware crashed some time ago.

I had a very bad experience with a trader that had a lot of + eval's but got screwed anyway. I took a 1000 mile trip and ended up in jail but I got my stuff back. I may have went a little overboard over $32.00 but I doubt that he will be trading on here again.

LoL
I bet you scared the sh!t out of him by showing up at his door.

I've always wanted to start selling stuff on there. Only occassionally though. I only have THREE ebay purchases (Cuz I would even use that as a reference) so I thought of how could I show people I'm legit.

I always said that if I DID do purchases or selling, I would personally contact the person first. (I think that would help people that would buy from me, someone that doesn't have many or ANY sales at all.) Hell, I got free nights/weekends, why not call them 😀
