What's up with all the secrecy for new hardware?

NDA. Rumored release dates. Secret code press releases. Posted screen shots. Denial by officials. And so on. CPUs and motherboards seem to be the worst. Even web sites will do crazy things like post a picture of the back side of a cpu, some trivial BIOS screen, or corner of a motherboard, and then ... nada. OK, so we're supposed to guess. Do we get rebate vouchers if we guess correctly? The worst things are the little rumors that someone talked to someone who said he heard from someone else that some company that "we all know" will release a product before some unknown date in the future. Uh, yeah. Roger that.

I mean, seriously, what is with all the covert spy verus spy stuff for hardware? I can understand it during R&D, but when road maps are published and products have been displayed at shows, it is time to get over it. But instead things are just getting going. At that point it isn't a secret anymore; instead it becomes a mind numbing maze of rumor and inudendo based on secret conversations with secret people, who apparently have head injuries.

Product X will be delayed. Wait, not it won't. Wait, it isn't really delayed, although there will be a delay before it becomes available. And, by the way, we can't tell you anything about product X. Why? Hey, how do you know about product X? If there is a product X, we can't say anything until it is released, which we expect will be Q1 of the year after the year before, give or take 3 human generations. But you will really love product X since it is what we want to sell you. Anyway, we can't say any more because then you would ask about product X rev. 1.0000001. And you didn't hear that from us.

I sometimes feel like I will have to be blindfolded and taken to a secret cave in order to get real information. Is this some kind of industry joke? It's crazy.

Hey, this thread is right up my alley. 🙂

I honestly think it's got everything to do with the fact that building your own PC has entered the mainstream. Look at what complete Dell and Gateway systems, NICE systems are going for these days! Less than $1K or so.

Way back when, I paid about $2,800, IIRC for a P3-550 Dell rig!

Major "mainstream" companies like Memorex now make LED case fans, neon and other "PC Tweaker" type gear.

Two years ago, only hardcore geeks built their own rigs. These days, every BestBuy and Circuit City not only has cases, but fans, CPU HSFs, T.I.M., cables and such.

B/C of this "now cool with everyone" deal, manufacturers have seen increased profits, so to boost them, they impose all this secret society bullshiit...and we love it.

I've been itching and twitching for an *OFFICIAL* review of ANY NF3-250 board for months now. It's supposed to be out by "end Feb" have we seen a glimpse of it yet? Psh, hell no.

IMO, ATI and Nvidia are the worst. The only thing we've heard is Nvidia giving out some BS performance claims, but no specifics about the new chips.

how do you know it's bs if it ain't even out yet?

They were claiming obscene (200-300%) gains in HL2 and Doom III, smells like BS to me.

The secrecy is to protect the performance figures before release to stop the competitors knowing how fast the oposition will be. I am currently on a 5 year NDA from ARM from doing work experience with them and I realy know too much about some interesting industry things.

Take a recent example. NVidia. FX5800Ultra WILL ROCK YOU ALL!!!!!!! IT'LL BE SO FASSSST YOULL WONDER IF YOU ARE FLYING!!!! NO $HIT!!!!! Release date - 1st dec 2002!

mid feb - it is released. Gets beaten to dust by 6 month old radeon 9700pro. Makes your copter/airplane/shuttle sim sound more realistic.

I think they are all playing safe.

I think all the secrecy is because the manufacturers have finally figured out that all the hype actually works against them.

Giving out specs and outrageous performance claims months before a product launch only leads to unrealistic expectations of the final product.

There is usually a consumer backlash because of this. Which is silly, since we are the ones who are doing the most overhyping in forums like this.

No, I think I like it better this way. Nowadays, the manufacturers just tease us with glimpses and a tiny bit of info about up and comming products.

A much more mature way of doing things, more class too.

Now if only the fashion industry would realize this.

lol
