Make me uneasy as I've been unemployed for 3 months now. :(

* UPDATE (12/8/11) *- Got an offer letter yesterday for an Entry Level IT position. Signed and submitted today.

I will start working on 1/3/12. I am ecstatic!

This will be my first full time job after I graduating last year. I spent the first half of this year doing short term contract jobs before going unemployed back in August. Being unemployed sucks, hope you guys the best of luck on your job search.

The Government keeps saying the Recession ended and that there are plenty of jobs. Of course other than the 1% wealthy the rest of us 99% don't see that the Recession is over and don't see plenty of jobs.

Have you posted in the Jobs thread at the top yet?

Best wishes on finding something.

Be prepared to move to another state to find something.

3, that's all? I moving on to my 7th month of unemployment....I have been side projects, free work, and I still cannot get my foot in most places. 3 years in consulting killed my chances of doing other stuff.

Sorry to hear that Gibson.

Try padding the shit out of your resume- replace keywords for each jobs so you say 'what they want to hear'. I have a temp resume that I edit every time I apply to jobs.

The current interview I got (on other thread), honestly I had to highlight my sidework at my old job, passing it off as my primary duties.

So now my resume has a broader scope.

You gotta play the game, esp in this economy.

can you elaborate on this? how does consulting kill the chances of doing other things? wouldn't there be a large variety of projects to show experience in? I am interested to know because Im about to sign on to join an IT consulting firm.

It was not IT. It was consulting in the environmental field doing controls and some process and electrical. The thing is that it is not hands on, so you get skills like project management, but it requires is knowledge on how it works, just not necessarily building it. The issue that arises is that most engineering companies want the hands on work. I never created a PCB circuit, did ARM development, or did complex AC analysis at my previous job. The closest thing I have ever done in my previous job was read PLC programs and critique them. Everything is design-build. You makes specifications and drawings to tell the contractor what you want, and it is the contractor's responsibility to take care of the fine details. My job was to just do the big picture and lay the ground work with conduit runs and correct wire sizes and to "specify" what I wanted purchased. It is kind of a niche field, but it's growing really fast, but I did not really enjoy it at all.

I wish I possessed some hard skills to specialize in a particular field as well. Currently, my resume focuses on process improvement and try to relate much as possible at job postings and interviews.

At least if they ever ask me 'what is my weakness', that's my legit answer which doesn't sound too bad (considering they already got me in the door).

I think that speaks alot by itself. you should be able to sell yourself just based on project management skills, being a leader, coordinator, and facilitator.

It does....but I want to get back to what i did my internships in. It's hardcore electrical design work. They just concentrate on the hard skills, which is understandable. I actually got a job a few months ago, but when I accepted the offer, they said funding was taken away.

Congrats :), I'm still looking for an EE position, though half-heartedly now since I'm working a shitty job to save up money.

Nice!

I just started @ a new place on Tuesday after a LONG hiatus. Luckily I was getting unemployment and I padded my income doing odd jobs while going to school, got a Network+ cert, etc.

They are pretty much training me from the ground up doing tech support for hosting services, configuration, troubleshooting, colocation, etc. I got very lucky... I feel very fortunate, because it seems like a great company. I know they passed up on people with MUCH more experience considering I have ZERO experience in this.... lol!
