Apologies for the vague title.

What is the medical term for the mental "illness" where people feel like they deserve the bad things that happen to them? For example, a woman gets beaten by her husband, and she truly believes she deserved it because of her attitude or some such. I guess it may not be an illness so much as a state of mind...

Stupidity.

Actually, lack of self worth. When told you are a p.o.s. over and over again, you start to believe it. Reinforcement with beatings helps close the deal.

dependent personality disorder?

doesn't totally fit but whatever it is, it's marked by an extreme lack of self confidence/worth.

it's not a diagnosable mental illness really; it's just the person trying to internalize the blame. It's easier to blame yourself than the other person, it lets you keep your world in order.

battered woman syndrome; see battered person defense or battered woman defense.

^ I believe this is what you're looking for

Stockholm Syndrome (below post) is similar to battered woman syndrome.

Also, these people who are "afflicted" with this have really low self esteems

its really really fucking sad :/
