What's this laptop worth?

My mother-in-law inadvertently bought the wrong AC adapter with too much voltage and ended up messing up her laptop after using it for about 9 months with the wrong adapter.

Anyway, it is a Toshiba Satellite 1805-S254 with P3 1GHZ, 256MB RAM, 20GB drive that will not format, bad battery, new Toshiba AC adapter, 14" LCD. Everything else was tested by a repair place and deemed fine, but it would cost another $185 for a replacement battery and 20GB drive, and I am building her a computer instead.

LCD works perfectly, keyboard, DVD all function fine.

Was thinking of either E-baying it.

as a non working machine not much, would be worth more to someone needing parts really, you have serial number and model number? i could run it, maybe its still under warranty

sent you pm with buy offer

It is definitely out of warranty. The repair place said it was functioning for them when they tested it with the right adapter. I waited over a week for them to order me one but they never got it and I bought one myself. I just confirmed with them that it is the right Toshiba adapter.

The only other thing they mentioned was that the power button takes a second or two and then powers up. I wonder if that may be a possibility as to the cause.

Any ideas now? If I cannot figure it out soon, I will just sell it as the parts should be worth something to someone.

Anymal, already PM'ed you.

A new 1805-S274 with P3 1.1, 256ram, 15" TFT, with usual complement of extras sold for approx $800 on e-bay recently. There are also a couple on half.com with your model config selling for approx $800 as well. Several current auctions have a similar or better equipped Toshibas with buy it nows for $750-$850. With that said, I'd estimate the laptop is worth about $600-650 considering the cost of a 20gig HD & battery replacement.

Toshibas make solid notebooks, and their value holds relatively well. It may be worth fixing if the price is right on the replacement parts. Best of luck to you and remember when sellings its basically only worth what people are willing to spend.....its matter of finding the right people. =)

Already sold on Ebay the day I put it up. I got an email back from a place that will do a motherboard exchange for $220 but I still did not want to go through the hassle. Just going to build another XPC instead.
